Just wanted to add a note that this has now changed since my reply two months ago. The new version of Vegas (v18) was released yesterday and it has a Colorization plugin that uses AI to guess the colors in black and white footage. It’s far from perfect and it’s a first version, so it will undoubtedly improve over time, but it’s the best solution for now.

June 11, 2020 at 3:47 am in reply to: How to Restore Video Track

Easiest thing to do to correct mistakes like this is to Undo (Ctrl+Z) right after you make them. In the situation you find yourself in, two Ctrl+Z’s would do the trick. Unfortunately this doesn’t work if you have since closed and saved the program.

In that case, what I would probably do is delete the B clip that was created when you split, then zoom out and drag the A clip until it reaches the end, thus restoring it to its original length.

If you made multiple edits to the alignment of the audio and video prior to deleting the video track, and have since closed the project (preventing undo), then there’s not much you can do other than redo the work by dragging the video track in from scratch, ungrouping & deleting the audio that comes with it, then line it up to your audio edits.

June 9, 2020 at 9:33 pm in reply to: Is Vegas good for me?

Vegas is generally pretty stable even on large projects, but I do get lockups from time to time. To be fair, I get the same types of lockups in Adobe Premiere.

I tend to use Premiere for larger projects only because of Dynamic Link to After Effects. The workflow between the Adobe Suite is really something special and despite Magix’s progress in this area (Vegas Post, etc) it doesn’t feel like one cohesive suite as they basically just licensed software from Fxhome and skinned it a bit differently.

But for quick projects with no motion graphics or crazy effects there is nothing faster and easier than Vegas. Vegas is also lightyears ahead when it comes to audio and I do all my broadcast radio production in Vegas, everything from full radio shows to short segments, commercials, sweepers or promos.

I would honestly feel naked without both suites, Magix and Adobe, in my toolkit.

As far as I know, there is no “easy” software to colorize black and white videos. You can do it, but you have to use your imagination and experience to manually paint in each color to correspond to various shades of gray, and go frame-by-frame. It’s a long and painstaking process.

Eventually it may be possible to teach AI to do it, that actually seems like a pretty good use case for machine learning models. But for now you’ve gotta do it the hard way.

June 5, 2020 at 5:18 am in reply to: Windows 10

It certainly works with Windows 10. But when you upgrade your OS there’s a lot of garbage from your old version that gets left behind, including codec fragments which could be causing your problems.

First thing I’d do is uninstall any codec packs and then reinstall them fresh if you need them.

If you still have problems, you might have to bite the bullet and do a fresh Windows 10 install. It sucks, but it’s a panacea for a lot of these issues that arise out of upgrading.

June 5, 2020 at 5:10 am in reply to: Buying current hardware for Vegas issue

Ryzen 3600 is the best CPU for the money right now, hands down. You don’t need an x570 motherboard for it. You would do fine with even a budget b450 board (the b450 tomahawk is quite a good one) or the upcoming b550 boards if you anticipate wanting to upgrade your CPU at a later date (b550 will be released on June 16).

Editing 4k video will take advantage of 32gb of memory. Don’t skimp and get less than that. Make sure you install the ram to run in dual channel mode by separating the dimms as indicated by the manual.

As for Graphics card, AMD cards run really well in Vegas, you would do well with a 5700XT or if you want to spend an extra $100-150, get an Nvidia RTX 2070 Super.

For power supply, you should be able to run all this effectively on 500-600w. Try to get a gold or platinum efficiency if you can afford it, but power supplies and motherboards are seemingly in short supply right now, due to shipping slowdowns from China and increased demand worldwide due to quarantine and government stimulus.

Don’t forget a fast SSD for editing (get the largest M.2 NVME drive you can afford), a sizable HDD for long term storage, and an external HDD for backup!

January 16, 2012 at 12:53 am in reply to: More CD burning issues

I have the problem on my Vegas 10 system exactly as described. The last second or two is cut off from the last track.

I’ve been using Vegas since Vegas Audio v1, so I most definitely know what I’m doing. Never had these problems before.

Also having problems where Vegas will burn bad (unplayable) discs and report that the burning was successful. This is the worst case scenario, as we now have to screen all discs in their entirety.

January 1, 2012 at 6:37 pm in reply to: Keying advice

Thanks guys, for the suggestions, I will give them a try.

Usually this footage is pretty easy to key, it was shot using the Chromatte keying system. Believe it or not, here is a shot of just the screen from the same shoot:

The problem is that the talent got too close to the camera, allowing both the blue light to spill on himself and robbing the backdrop from reflecting it back to the lens. C’est la vie I suppose. But this was a problem for about 50 seconds of the 10 minutes of footage.

Thanks again for your help. Happy New Year!

July 20, 2011 at 12:30 pm in reply to: how can I color correct grass?

This is just a guess, but I think the reason it looks neon-ey is because it’s transforming the brightness and saturation properties.

You just want to change the hue, and maybe bump up the saturation just a little bit.
