  • How do I flip graphic to black backside? (In AE)

Posted by Mike Mackenzie on June 17, 2008 at 3:20 pm

    Hi everyone…

I know how to do a simple flip of a 2d object in 3d space, but what I would like to do is flip it so that the backside is flat black instead of the same graphic as the front. Cameras will be in motion so I cannot simply switch to a black graphic midway through the flip.

I seem to recall that you could specify what the backside looks like but cannot seem to find that. Am using CS3 version of AE.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

    Hi Mike –

I’m waiting on AE CS3 to arrive, so I will tell you how I’d do it in V7.0. I’d make a black solid the same size as your front graphic and move it one to two pixels back in z space. When your objects do their flip, no one should be the wiser. Are you using motion blur?

You might want to do the flip with the two objects set as 3D objects, and the black one parented to the front one. It should achieve the same result.

Another alternative is to use the “Card Wipe” transition. It is a true 3d effect. Set the rows and columns to 1 and then you can specify a front and back layer. Depending on what else is going on in your comp it may introduce some unintended effects though (because it really is only operating on a 2d layer), so be careful.
