I shoot everything 30p, and I put the work on TV via Beta SP, and also on the Web and in DVDs, never had a problem with interlacing issues.

    Tony,

If you missed this step, here’s what I do. And it’s not updated yet in my article except in some of the comments.

I let FCP capture a whole tape, and I’ll name the capture something like Tape 001.

When it’s done there are lots of clips in the browser, depending on how many times the camera was started. I then open each clip into the viewer, and decide if I want to keep it, and change the name to something appropriate. I also open my capture scratch folder, and any of the clips I don’t want, I just toss from there.

After all the clips have been renamed in the browser, I select them all and control click to rename, file to match clip. in an instant, you see all the QT clips in your capture folder change, and you’re done.

    Does this help?

Borrowing from Photoshop techniques, using the channels to refine your B&W is the way to go. I think you can do it in FCP with some of the channel controls, but yes, AE has incredible channel controls.

I’m sure the 3 way will give you decent results, as would Color, but it’s also important to consider your final destination, TV, Web whatever, there are interlacing issues.

    Hope this helps.

I agree that AE is much more friendly and better when working with layers. You also can do it with a layered Illustrator file, which of course is vector with obvious advantages over Photoshop files.

This sounds like it’s time to trash your prefs, fix permissions and do a restart.

Great question/issue. What I do on every project is create a slug and drag it to the right to make the timeline as long as I want it. I have my timeline set at 005830 to start so I can put up bars and whatnot. So my programs start at 1 hour and it’s really easy to keep up with the time issues.

Your mouse could need batteries, and/or you should fix permissions and clean your caches. Get Leopard Cache cleaner, it’s free.

When using the Motion window as Ben suggests, using travel mattes is a great way to go. It gets you around the keyframe issues on the dissolves.

I have found that in working with larger media the garbage mattes’ points have to be entered manually, it’s a bit of a pain but after a while it gets pretty easy.
