Creating stunning black and white video
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had any tips/tricks on how to create stunning black and white video from color footage… I’ve gone in, and using the 3 Way Color Corrector removed all color, made my blacks darker and whites lighter to good effect, but there has to be a different way to get a great effect.
Does After Effects have better tools to work with when turning everything black and white?

Borrowing from Photoshop techniques, using the channels to refine your B&W is the way to go. I think you can do it in FCP with some of the channel controls, but yes, AE has incredible channel controls.
I’m sure the 3 way will give you decent results, as would Color, but it’s also important to consider your final destination, TV, Web whatever, there are interlacing issues.

Can you point me in the right direction to learn a bit more about the interlacing issues I need to be aware of? I’m doing one version of the video for TV, and one for the web.

TV version should be interlaced. You can then create a deinterlaced QT file for web use. There are lots of deinterlacing options. Personally, I use Nattress deinterlacing plugins as they give you shot by shot control. Copy your sequence and name it as deinterlace or web before applying the filter. FCP’s deinterlace filter is basic and not recommended.
A popular alternative is to do the deinterlace in compressor when making the web version. This is done using frame controls and this has been covered many times so a search of the forum will offer details and other opinions.
