PSD into FCP does anyone use this for layering graphics?
Posted by Jason Brown on September 23, 2009 at 6:19 pmHey Guys,
I’m working with several PSD’s and trying to “animate” graphics basically building graphic pages. It’s not working very well and I was wondering if anyone was using PSD import into final cut as a regular workflow and moving around layers.
I’ve read the manual and looked around on Lynda and still haven’t found any useful information on how to do this easily.

September 23, 2009 at 7:35 pmWe do this all the time, mainly for lower thirds. If you’re building a lot of layers, Motion or After Effects would be better. I’ve built up to 25 layers of PSD in Final Cut Pro and it does work just fine, but it’s definitely not a compositing program like Motion or AE.

I really need to learn motion, I keep rendering from AFX and I’d love to work natively in the FCP timeline.

September 23, 2009 at 9:44 pmYou might want to consider automatic duck as an alternate workflow. You can push your edit into AE layers and all intact from FCP.

September 23, 2009 at 11:56 pmAs an AE guy, I recommend you get your basic Motion chops down as soon as you can. There are some things that are a joy in that program. Going from FCP to Motion and back is pretty cool too.

https://www.automaticduck.com “Absolutely. This is what I recommend for anyone moving between FCP and AE. Well worth every penny and you should be able to pay for it in your first job or two. We use the Duck all the time moving Avid projects into FCP and it’s just awesome.

September 24, 2009 at 1:58 pmI agree that AE is much more friendly and better when working with layers. You also can do it with a layered Illustrator file, which of course is vector with obvious advantages over Photoshop files.

September 24, 2009 at 2:43 pmCompare the price of rebuilding an edit in AE or rendering out of AE, needing changes going back in rendering back out etc it’s a no brainer as far as cost goes, let alone client satisfaction with a clean composite.
As a side note it makes for an excellent way to push VFX to other facilities. capture in FCP and sequence, push to AE, deliver AE project and media to VFX. almost all have a way to deal with that.
I’d say autoduck is a huge bargainbut please Wes I do need to update soon, and after moving and building a new facility things are tight
