Boy, join the club. Keyframing in FCP sucks huge. Best I can offer is use travel mattes, you can put your transitions on those and keep keyframes on you clips undisturbed.

Toonit is VERY cool, but it is really slow to render. Take a look at Studio Artist, it is EXACTLY what you need.

Funny, I remember that feature in Premiere 5.1! I missed it when I switched to FCP. But I think the media manager can show this, although I’ve never done it.

Yes, start from the very beginning and tell us what your settings are for everything, FCP sequence, codecs etc. It does sound like you are working with DV and each time you roundtrip it, you are adding another lousy DV compression to everything. Please be very specific.

Well, if you shoot 30p you can ignore fields, if you shoot 60i and put it in a DV timeline it will automatically add the shift fields filter.

David is talking about simply changing the compression settings of your sequence, which, while forcing a render, can result in improved graphics and transitions etc. from a DV sequence to say, an 8bit one.
Note that if you are monitoring via FireWire, you will not get real-time playback anymore, but you can still spot check your timeline after rendering.
Best advice when working on a FireWire-based system is to wait till you’re sure your done to do this, and if it’s not obvious, this will not help if you are going to tape, only good for Web, DVD and similar delivery, as you can’t play uncompressed to tape via FireWire.

What codecs are you trying? What is the alpha output?
I use AE titles in FCP all the time, mostly they are Animation codec at millions+ for the alpha channel, and that should be set to straight. Never had a quality problem.
Once inside FCP. you may have to go to Modify>Alpha Type and set it to straight.
Also, you probably know this, but you will likely need to render and you must check quality on a decent production monitor, or at least a good TV.

FCP is an editor. The other tools were designed for manipulating media. It doesn’t really matter, except that tying up FCP to convert files is a huge waste of horsepower.
