That my well all be true, but a look at the videocopilot tutorial is pretty amazing nonetheless, especially if your stuck with footage shot during the day.

Andrew Kramer has a great AE tutorial on Day for Night at videocopilot.com. Fabulous, but you will need to just use some of the techniques that can be done in FCP.
So, with Shane’s advice this might help.

You might try transcoding one or the other in Compressor to get the same frame rate.

I’m on a 2.4 also, works great, but I also have 4 Gigs RAM, highly recommend. Motion can run slow though.

Even with FCP 6 which can handle multiple frame rates in one sequence it is better to make them all the same. Compressor or Cinema Tools is what you need.

Your first mistake is editing in HDV. It’s a TERRIBLE format for editing. You’d be much better off capturing your HDV material to ProRes.
Your second mistake is trying to do a decent speed change in FCP. It sucks for that. Send the stuff to be retimed to Motion, and use the Optical Flow settings.

Compressor does a great job uprezing 720×480 footage. You will have a frame rate issue, as your 720p footage is likely 23.98, no? Compressor can take care of this too.
Shane Ross hasa great tutorial on this.
On the other hand, depending on your delivery, you could just work in an SD format.

There are SFX of a tape rewind, and you can take your clip and say, triple it’s speed and check the reverse box. You can put some TV noise over this and mess with the blend modes, there’s some great stuff on Artbeats (film Clutter) and in the Riot Gear disc from Video Co-pilot (highly recommend).
I have done several of these in the past year with great results.

Oh, well I’m running the latest of everything, but as I recall when I got the MBP I was running v 5.1 and it still all worked. Since I have done a clean install and put in Leopard and upgraded FCP Studio to v 2 and have done all my software updates since, and it runs like a top.
