Hey Stace,

What scares me is that there’s 4 tracks of audio in this footage, and it seems to have been miced differently over the course of a two day shoot with two cameras. So sometimes I have good clean two tracks for the talent and sometimes each one is on a single track. The timeline looks like a mess.

Totally false, at least with the immediate last generation of MPPs. I have a 15″ MBP 2.4 ghz and I’ve run several different size monitors off the DVI port. I just set them up like any monitor with a tower, open System Prefs, arrange the monitors as I like and work away. Never had any issue at all. BTW, if you don’t have a FireWire device connection for FCP you will not have FW DVNTSC (Or in your case PAL) show up under view options.

Also, for some of the others in here, there are four settings for Digital Cinema Desktop Preview:

Digital Cinema Desktop Preview
Digital Cinema Desktop Preview – Full Screen
Digital Cinema Desktop Preview – Raw

On my setup, when I select number one (Main) it takes over my laptop screen.

Two and three go to my external monitor.

Raw puts it in the external monitor only small.

Whatever image you want with transparency must have an alpha channel. This comes automatically from Photoshop layers or say a 32 bit targa file with an alpha channel.

Then, after you do what you want with it in FCP, simply use Export>With QuickTime conversion, click the options button and select Animation+ and export your movie. It will have a transparent background.

There’s an option in User Preferences to “Make new clip” on timecode breaks. I never have any problems capturing from my Canon using this. I think it’s a cool feature actually, as you can go into the browser when it’s done and rename each clip.

HDV is pretty good acquisition format but terrible for editing. You are much better off capturing to ProRes, or, changing your settings to ProRes before your final output from FCP.

It is also better to edit in 1080i (if you didn’t) and let Compressor downconvert it, short of having a Kona card.

I have this camera and this workflow and my DVDs look fantastic.

Yes, I know they suck, but so would round-tripping into STP, as the audio is all over the place, and it’s a complex edit.
