Creating a bug or animated lower 3rd with transparent background
In Final Cut Pro 6, how do you create a (.mov) file with a transparent background for bugs or lower thirds. Each time we create one it has a solid black background. We need to be able to lay these over clips without having to key out the background.

Have you tried making the .mov in animation codec? It has an alpha channel which should solve your problem.

Yes, I have Motion. It does work that way. I just wondered if there was anyway to do it in FCP. Thank you for your response.

I have had really good luck using ‘Export Using Compressor’ with an Animation codec. You just have to make sure everything is unrendered in your timeline for it to work. Not sure if its necessary to use compressor but it works great for me.

Whatever image you want with transparency must have an alpha channel. This comes automatically from Photoshop layers or say a 32 bit targa file with an alpha channel.
Then, after you do what you want with it in FCP, simply use Export>With QuickTime conversion, click the options button and select Animation+ and export your movie. It will have a transparent background.
