Well, we’re in the same boat, I have the same G5 and an LH too. Think I’ll go over to the Apple store this afternoon and browse.
Would you get the flat screen or the glossy? 15″ or 17″?

Hmm, I didn’t know that, but then I have a Kona so when I’ve worked in 23.98 I guess I’ve taken what it does for granted.

There’s a switch on the front of the deck called “wireless/remote,” play with that. it can shut off the remote.

This is so simple, just put your footage in a 4×3 sequence, FCP will letterbox it for you.

There’s a subtle, yet important aspect of this effect that I don’t see listed here, it’s the way the text blurs and then fades at the top, pretty easy to miss or NOT do correctly.
That aside, there is a little free app called SWTSG which is absolutely amazing, you simply enter your text and it’s done. Here’s the link:

If it’s just a QT you need for your entry, the frame rate shouldn’t matter. Just edit and output 23.98.
Your director is a bonehead, 30p would have looked about the same and you would be in 29.97 land. I have that same camera and I shoot 30p all the time.
Anyway, your workflow should work okay, or, if you have a Kona or BM card, it should play it out to 29.97 to tape. Or you can convert the footage with Compressor or Cinema Tools prior to editing. 24p, what a needless waste of time and energy for something the average Joe can neither see nor cares about.

Peter has a point, OT perhaps, but a good one. I got REALLY tired of all the speed effects VS. did on the Tour de France, too much.
I prefer to do this in AE with time remapping, and revisioneffects FieldsKit is a great companion on this. It will turn your fields into frames giving you twice the info to work with. There are other ways to do this, but FieldsKit does a super job.

The hardware you would need is the fastest available Mac, but even then I’m not sure. There is, however, nothing to be gained by doing this, except saving the step of converting native HDV to ProRes some other way, it would be just the same to put your native HDV in a ProRes timeline, and render. I do it almost every day. No big deal.
