FCP will know and tell you everything about your footage from that camera captured via FireWire. Just look through the info in the browser, you will see the frame rate, size, everything about the clips. Doesn’t matter if you have different settings on one tape, it will capture them all the right way.

If you just want to beef it up a little, open the file in Photoshop, select the alpha channel and go to selection, modify, expand, and set it to 1 or 2 pixels, then re-save the selection as the alpha channel. Of course, you should do a save as, so you keep your original file. This will beef it up, wether you like it is another matter.

You can use the easy setup as described, but I just set the device control to HDV Firewire and the capture preset to HDV, do all this before you plug in the camera and it should work.

Very simple. In the “playback standard” setting in the menu, make sure it’s set to HDV. The default is Auto. FCP will not capture without setting it to HDV. Do all this before you plug the camera into the computer. It will work.

Part 1. Changing the compressor will help, but only your graphics etc. The footage will never be what it was before you went to DV.
Part 2. Never, never, never change versions mid-project. The guys with the pictures at the top of the forum will spank you mercilessly for this. Best you can hope to do is try cutting and pasting your media etc. from the old to the new, or export a self contained movie.
Part 3. Going to Avid? Why, after all the pain you’ve been put through would you do this? If that’s what’s hooked up to your digi, you should have kept the whole project in there. I’m not sure about an OMF, sorry. Get a Kona card for Pete’s sake.

Define “animated.” What are you trying to do? The fastest “animation” would be using FCP’s text tool or Title 3D and the motion tab, or Title 3D’s controls tab, with which you can quickly move titles on screen, around screen and off screen. FCP’s transitions and third party plugins greatly accelerate moving them on and off.
So that would be the fastest.
Next I would say Motion or LIveType would be almost as fast, or, just animating text from Photoshop layers.
Then I’d start talking about AE, you mention mattes, again, what do you want to do?

I’m in AZ too, I remember hearing you talk about the glossy screen last month at the AZFCPUG meeting, but I wasn’t paying attention I guess. So you’re saying it is noticeably sharper? I’ll have to check that again at the Apple store…

Excellent thoughts on the size issue, 15″ seems to make sense if portability is what I’m after, and the sale to the missis would be a lot easier, “look how much I’m saving by getting the little one, Hon! See what a sacrifice I’m making?” LOL!
