Something’s not right, these should look the same. I had a similar problem (no, the EXACT same pixelization) in a DV project not long after I upgraded to Studio 2. It was driving me nuts as the clips were pristine originals from my DVX 100 and they were all pixelated on the edges, just like this.
I fixed it by trashing prefs. Since then I have done what you are trying to do using 30p HDV captured via FW from a Canon A1, with nothing like this going on. Try trashing prefs.

I’m pretty sure the Sony 1500 does this, a friend on mine has one, I will ask him later as it’s early here still. It does have a slot for an SDI card, that I know.

I agree with Cathy, as long as you name your clips and store them properly, you should be good to go.

Oh, well, I have never done anything else but capture now. Just always shoot plenty of handles and you should get through most anything.

What Cathy says may help, although I was surprise that when I was testing capture with my A1, I put 30f, 24F and 60i in a row on one tape, and it captured each one at the proper frame rate on it’s own, on the fly. It knew!
You seem to be doing everything right, as a last resort I would take a paper clip and push the reset button on top of the camera, but first, try trashing your FCP prefs, use an HDV easy setup when it re-boots, plug the FW cable into the camera BEFORE you launch FCP and see if that helps.

If you want to save some money, the MXO is redundant, especially if you are checking color on your Sony.
FCP will send the DVI straight to the CD from the view menu, the pictures would be identical. The only thing the MXO is buying you is calibration and extra outputs. My 2 cents…

For me, Squeeze has to many variables which require the patience to correct for them, which I find I have to do a lot less with Episode and Compressor. In tests I’ve done, Squeeze m2v files pretty much suck without a lot of tweaking, where Compressor and Episode pretty much give me exactly what I put into them. I never use Squeeze for DVDs as a result. Files have a really weird chroma gain and a darker gamma shift which I hate. Not worth the trouble when the other two work so well right out of the start gate.
Don’t under estimate the power of Compressor, it is a really good tool.

You have everything you need already, except for maybe the Cinema display or a nice Dell. Your Kona card will downconvert to your Sony and you can pretty well trust that for color. If you get a Cinema display or a Dell, just use that to see a pixel for pixel image from your HD stuff, you don’t need an MXO as you can just send your picture to the display via DVI.

You might try pushing the reset button on top of the camera and start over.
