Can you capture from HDV to ProRes422 without additional hardware such as an Aja I/O?

I want to hook up my HDV camera with firewire-only and capture straight to ProRes422 to get out of the long-GOP.

    Can I?

    Well,
The hardware you would need is the fastest available Mac, but even then I’m not sure. There is, however, nothing to be gained by doing this, except saving the step of converting native HDV to ProRes some other way, it would be just the same to put your native HDV in a ProRes timeline, and render. I do it almost every day. No big deal.

WITHOUT a capture card? No…cannot capture it as ProRes via firewire. Your only options are HDV, AIC and DV. If you want to capture it as ProRes then you’ll need a Kona card or Decklink card, AND a MacPro. ONLY a MacPro is capable of converting to ProRes as you capture. Except with the use of the I/O HD which has the ProRes hardware encoder on board.

BUT…you can always transcode INTO ProRes after you capture via the Media Manager or Compressor.

[Shane Ross] “ONLY a MacPro is capable of converting to ProRes as you capture.”

Not since the FCP 6.0.1 update and the related OS / QT updates. our G5 Quad can convert to ProRes just fine in both SD and HD using the Kona 3 card. Prior to those updates, it did not work correctly at all.
