so, who wants to be the guinea pig for QT 7.4.1 that was just released?
i’m not going to do it at work, i’ll try it at home tonight.

no, i don’t want it to move when the mask layer moves. here’s a better example, i have a circle mask on a solid. there are no key frames, the mask doesn’t move, but i want a separate object to move along the path of the mask so the movement of the object is defined by the vector path(s) of the mask. so in the instance above, the object would move in a circle because it is moving along the path of the circle mask. i seems like it should be able to be done but maybe it can’t. it’s similar to motion sketch in that in motion sketch you draw your path on screen and keyframes are captures and you can apply those keyframes to any object. the difference is that i don’t want to try to draw my path, i already have it in mask form and i was hoping i could tell an object to move along that path.
thanks

well, i went through the archive and install process (it seems that’s the only way to downgrade quicktime…just make sure you don’t install 7.4 again as you go through software update. download 7.3.1 from apples site). make sure you don’t throw away your “previous systems” folder. you’ll need that to move certain things like codecs, preferences, preference panes back amongst other things. most everything worked. i had to reinstall stuffit deluxe and font agent pro and things like mouse drivers, etc. this is the first time a software update has bitten me. this needs to be fixed asap and the next update has to say that this issue has been addressed or i’ll be too afraid to install another quicktime update.
i’m rendering as i type and i just passed the 15 minute mark with no crash so i’m assuming it’s fixed and that the problem is in fact QT 7.4
at least i’m rendering again.

thanks dave,
that and the thread you gave me are very helpful. i’m not concerned with final cut…we don’t use it. we aren’t an editing department, more of an art department. we do have final cut 5. i may or may not install it. if i do, it’s no biggie if it doesn’t work.
i’m on vacation for the holidays so if when i come back we still haven’t heard from adobe, i’m just going to install leopard and deal with the outcome.
thanks again for your help.

you can, however, stripe the drives in concatenated mode (JBOD), without the drives being the same size. you don’t get any benefits of RAID1 or higher as far as speed and security but you don’t have to worry about each drive only being the size of the smallest drive in the RAID. but even with that mode, you can’t just add a drive to the raid, you have to unstripe the drives and once you do that the data is gone.

mike, we are working with a set company called FX and i’ve also talked to our local printers and unfortunately they both say that the image has to be converted to cmyk, even for duratrans. i want to investigate this further but it seems that anything print related must be cmyk (i think inkjet printers are an exception but i’m not sure about that). do you know of a company that will print things in RGB color space? if so, could you let me know who that is? i’d appreciate it.
ps. we even sent the duratrans to our set company in rgb just to see what they would do, not only could they not print it, but they had us convert it to cmyk (most print houses will do that conversion for us).
thanks

actually, no, i didn’t look in the manual. however, i only have the manual for cinema r9 XL. i’ve since upgraded to r9.6 XL bundle and the upgrade didn’t come with a manual but i’m sure i can get some good info from there.
thanks for the book recommendation. i’ll check it out.

if your problem is what i think it is, there is an easy solution. within the knoll light factory package is a plugin called UNMULT (it’s also online for free – https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/unmult.html). just add this effect to the same solid that you have the lens flare effect applied to. add it after the lens flare effect. it essentially unmultiplies the image from the alpha and creates a perfect alpha for your lens flare. i’d render it with a straight alpha, then it will give you the exact image you need along with the exact alpha.
hope this helps.
