i can’t seem to figure this one out. i hope you are able to do it. basically what i want to do is make a mask on a layer (keep it simple…a square mask), then i want a separate object (a photoshop file) to travel on the path of that mask (without having to eyeball it and set the keyframes myself obviousy). i know when you draw a motion path, it converts it to keyframes. that’s not what i’m looking for, i want to be able to either convert a mask’s path to keyframes, or just tell the object to follow the path of the mask (this would be especially helpful if the mask were to animate…the object would continue to travel based on the mask.

    hope that was clear.

    thanks

no, i don’t want it to move when the mask layer moves. here’s a better example, i have a circle mask on a solid. there are no key frames, the mask doesn’t move, but i want a separate object to move along the path of the mask so the movement of the object is defined by the vector path(s) of the mask. so in the instance above, the object would move in a circle because it is moving along the path of the circle mask. i seems like it should be able to be done but maybe it can’t. it’s similar to motion sketch in that in motion sketch you draw your path on screen and keyframes are captures and you can apply those keyframes to any object. the difference is that i don’t want to try to draw my path, i already have it in mask form and i was hoping i could tell an object to move along that path.

    thanks

    Thanks Dave

This was useful, exactly what I needed. 🙂

is it possible to move the object on the path without copying & pasting the keyframes? i need an object to following a path and want be able to modify the movement by changing the anchorpoints of my path (i didn’t want to copy&paste the keyframes again&again until i find the perfect movement). Especially when i need an particle-emitter from particle-layer_01 to follow the path and multiple copys of this layer with slightly variations of this path these option would be luxury to me.
    any suggestions?

    Hi Dave,
    can you please explain this

    • Make a Mask Shape keyframe on the mask layer and Copy it

    • Paste it into the POSITION property on the layer you want to move. AE defaults to giving you a 2-second move, with a keyframe for every mask vertex.

i am a basic AE user, i want to do the same thing as chris newman wanted…. i am creating whiteboard video, for that first of all i make solid layer and draw mask to it… so it can then reveal by animating the stroke start and end values… then i want to move a hand exactly as path… so i have to animate the hand using position key by frame or can i animation the hand image by tracking its position to mask somehowe?

Thanks so much Dave, I couldn’t remember that!

Athar, you have just to add a keyframe to the mask you already drewn, copy that keyframe, and PASTE it on the position of the hand layer.
