i have AE 6.0 on a Mac G5 dual 2.7 gHz OS 10.4.2 4 gb ram. i actually have 5 of those systems. since upgrading to tiger, i’ve had some problems (on all of the machines) with audio files in after effects 6. i typically work with .wav files…they seem to work best. when working with audio files, particularly when trying to view the waveform, but also when just playing them, i’ll get the following error message:

After Effects error: opening sound component (-2166)

does anyone know what this means? it doesn’t crash the program but it’s very irritating. i’m not positive that it happened when i made the switch to tiger (which was done with a clean install), but it’s been happening within that general time frame.

if anyone has experienced the same thing and/or knows of a solution to the problem i’d appreciate it.

    thanks

Don’t know what the relation to switching to Tiger might be, but I do know that you should always use AIFs on Macs instead of WAVs…and definitely not MP3s. My expereince has been that Macs have trouble with some WAVs, AVIs and MPG1s…and AE just doesn’t handle MP3s very well on either platform. Converting might sound a daunting task if you have tons of audio files, but most audio software has batch conversion, which makes it very easy.

    Hi Chris,

There’s a sound conflict in AE using the new 7.0.2 update from apple. Downgrade to 7.0.1 or lower and that might help your isuues. I was having problems exporting QT files with sound and getting the same errors (-2166). You can go to the apple quicktime support and downgrade you QT.

    Good Luck!!

I had the same problem using AE 5.5 on my Mac. The problem just seemed to start happening all of a sudden. Perhaps it happened when I upgraded to QT 7.0.2. I’ve since also upgraded to AE 6.5 and I don’t have the problem with the new AE.
Downgrading QT would have been a lot cheaper! So don’t tell me if it works-I’d rather not know.
