January 4, 2010 at 7:24 pm in reply to: Rendering Problem!!

On top of the link Dave posted I am curious to know if your rendering to a QT/AVI format.
When I am working on comps of some length I will often render to an image sequence and if I need to supply a QT render that from the image sequence.
I do this because if the system crashes, or the network goes down I only have to pick the render up from where it left of.

It might be that it crashes out again at the same frame, but next time you can restart from fresh and start it from that frame and not the start.

If I am having real problems with memory I often setup my render queue, close all my timeline tabs and also all my viewing windows then do a save. Restart AE and it will remember that those windows were closed, I can then just goto the render queue and fire the job off. Each of those tabs open use up some memory as well as the viewer window(composition, layer etc). I would also use the secret prefs mentioned in the link.

Not been a heavy user of Particular to know if having it purge the memory frequently thru the secret prefs will really slow the render…But the way I see it is better to just get it out and rendered :-P.

So if you happen to be rendering to QT/AVI movie i would suggest trying a image sequence (.TGA or similar)

what happens also when you try to render a single frame at that point and some frames after ?

Hope we get your render out the door!

    Thanks Dave,

Meant to have mentioned that all footage converted to QT Animation 100% before being imported into AE I find the Mac is even more picky about those temporal file formats than the PC, so I insist on converting the files even if my PC using peers feel the lack of need to do so (the Mac is my preference system to use).

I tend to use proxies a lot, render them fullsize and use them in my final renders. Never had a problem before with this work method, but just in case it was causing problems I imported these sequences and dropped them into there appropriate compositions and switched of the other layers ( just as nucleo would automate for you).

You can do something like this but not as elegantly as a 3D program.

The trick is to set the adjustment layer switch for the light you wish to have some form of linking. The next part of it is to place the 3D layers below this light. This light will only effect those layers below now and none of the layers above it.

It has many limitations but as far as I’m aware (I am a CS3 user) this is the only light linking that can be done.

Obviously stacking more lights above might effect layers that you don’t wish to but this might be enough to do what you want

  • Thanks for the input given 🙂

I think for the moment I will stick with aimation codec least I can get 25fps playback of my drives when using my laptop. I did recently create a QT in png format and was only able to get 15fps playback on my system (playing from QT Player). I am guessing the compression is slowing things down. I shall probably use that for long term archiving in the the future.

Pity no one has seen those other codecs on the Mac yet, they do interest me so I may just have to do some more investigation but with my PC (that poor thing is gathering some dust nowdays 😛 )

Just in case you were not aware of it, the manual for these plugin\\\’s are normally inside the folder when you instal it.

They have some great examples there of how you set everything up. What kind of effect/ tutorials are you looking for? There are some complex features to this plugin for example how folding is ordered maybe you are looking for some advice on how to better use the parameters in the plugin?

Glad you got to the end of it in the end.

People often SHY Layers when they have scripts controlling those elements so someone does not mess with things ie you lock the layer and shy it from view. or as you have found to hide elements (or tidy up your timeline)

Sounds to me as if some layers have been made SHY,

There is a global shy button along the top of the timeline area. Where mothion blur, frame blending and some other features can be switched on/off globally. You will most likely just need to unselect the shy layers button to reveal the \”missing\” layers.

    Hope that helps you out

August 4, 2009 at 11:03 pm in reply to: AE CS4 Freezes on Startup

On the few times I have had something similar to this ie opening a working project and it keeps crashing out what I have done is start AE from fresh and imported the thought to be troubled project. For some reason I have not had it crash out on me and can just resave and carry on.

Not saying it will work thou :-p just something I have done time to time in this situation and on CS3

August 2, 2009 at 1:43 pm in reply to: dots populate from center point

Depending on how you have setup your CC_Balls effect this might work for you.

If you duplicate your layer and before CC_balls add a RAMP effect AFTER the CC_Balls (If you do it before we will get the extra shading from cc_balls that we do not want). Set it RADIAL and position the ramp so the start point is where you want the fade to start from and drag the end position out so you have some nice variations of greys.

Now if you have not done to much distortion to the original setup of the CC_Balls plugin, say with a large scatter or many twists then the balls will be colored with various shades of grey from your center point outwards. You can use this as a luma track matte to reveal your original CC_Balls effect. (Therefore this layer needs to be above your original CC_Balls layer).

To do the reveal you will need to animate another effect after the RAMP, maybe THRESHOLD if you do not want such smooth transisitions or level/curves/Exposure to keep some of the grey values and have a smoother reveal. Just remember you will want to make the ramp go from entirly black–thru to lighter colours–and finishing on white (depending on how you set your ramp up, and if your using luma track matte or inv. (inverted)luma track matte). Hopefuly you get the idea.
If you are not used to track mattes I would suggest a glance in the manual or some of the tutorials online here :-).

Now this is doing something similar I hope to your circular mask. But if you build a solid that is tailored more to the original ball setup with no distortions (in there grid like setup) that has each ball a different value of luminance you should be able to do more complex procedual reveals by stacking up various mattes that you create and animate to reveal the balls as you want.

Hope this helps a little with a method that is more procedual, like I said it does have its limitations dont scater to highly or twist to much otherwise the balls are not so close to there original surrounding balls.

Failing that…Then I whole heartly aggree with doing it by hand 😛 Especially if it is just a case of revealing those few balls. Even if you use a similar trick of creating a luma matte. I would paint on a solid so the balls are more darker as you move from your center and use it as a luma track matte or if precomposed you might choose to use GRADIENT WIPE (under transisitions) lots of ways to do this. I just prefer more procedual methods.

July 22, 2009 at 3:22 am in reply to: Plug-ins for AE

Just a quick side note, you will find many great and amazing scripts out there all I know of are kindly given to the community for free some of these are as usuful as some plugins.
A quick search in google of ae scripts will bring most of the main sites.

For example a script called \”magnum\” will try to automatically find edit points for you.

If you have never touched on scripts before I highly recommend it I wish I found them myself quicker in my AE carear.

Once I\’m near my computer I will post some of my favourite resources for scripts.

Plugins I do love from a different company are also ones from revisionfx. twixtor, realsmart motion blur, shape I use often. I did demo some of there others but they were not required just yet in my tool kit.
