Is it doing it on the same frame?
Are you rendering to a movie file format?
I tend to render to image sequences so I can start from where ever a crash happened and after build any movie files I require from the image sequences.
we will probably need more info to help you out though 😀
Have you altered any of the memory settings in after effects?

I did get something similar but in 6.5. If I imported files thru the file dialog box I would be able to select them but on clicking import (or ok, I forget now) it would crash out. If I drag and dropped the file I wanted to import it would also crash out.
I tracked it down in my case to be a codec problem, I had installed one of those all in one codec packs and when I had it set to use all codecs( great for watching all sorts of strangely encoded videos) one of them would cause me problems ( I never found out which though) but setting it to only use the minimal amount of codecs seemed to get me out of trouble.
This is all assuming that trashing your preferences dosnt work though as this is definatly the first thing to try. Oh I was on a windows box also.
Hope this info is of help
    Regards

I would just add to the above that I have noticed for example that vector paint can easily add to the file size of the AE project (alot in my experience and also slow down saves 😛 ), as you may find that your painting many strokes to accomplish a task, im not sure if it is the same with the paint effect but im guessing so but this involves storing alot of data.

Just a thought as to why there might be such a large difference between your different projects.
