I have been running AE7 for a while now with no problems. However, I have recently run into a problem that I can’t seem to solve. Every time I try to import any type of file into a project, I get the dreaded message that says AE can’t continue and the program shuts down. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling a number of times with no success. If anyone has any suggestions I would certainly appreciate them.

I would start with trashing your preferences. Uninstalling and reinstalling will not do this.

Easiest way is to hold down either cmd-option-shift MAC or ctrl-alt-shift WIN when you start AE. You will then see a dialog asking if you want to reset your preferences.

I did get something similar but in 6.5. If I imported files thru the file dialog box I would be able to select them but on clicking import (or ok, I forget now) it would crash out. If I drag and dropped the file I wanted to import it would also crash out.
I tracked it down in my case to be a codec problem, I had installed one of those all in one codec packs and when I had it set to use all codecs( great for watching all sorts of strangely encoded videos) one of them would cause me problems ( I never found out which though) but setting it to only use the minimal amount of codecs seemed to get me out of trouble.
This is all assuming that trashing your preferences dosnt work though as this is definatly the first thing to try. Oh I was on a windows box also.
Hope this info is of help
