An AE project is purely data referencing other files or effects and parameters within the program, as well as the data that tells AE what to do with that stuff. So for example, The number of keyframes will have a big impact on file size. So will any parameter not set to it’s default value, as well as masks, markers, expressions, or anything else that adds to what is by default a simple text file. Even the number of files being referenced, or how many solids and their names adds to the file size. And that’s just what I can think of off the top of my head.

So the more you do in there, the larger your AE file will be. But on the up side, for storage and email purposes, since it is a text file, zipping up the file will bring the file size down dramatically. Also, reducing the project file to remove anything notr being used will also bring the file size down.

I would just add to the above that I have noticed for example that vector paint can easily add to the file size of the AE project (alot in my experience and also slow down saves 😛 ), as you may find that your painting many strokes to accomplish a task, im not sure if it is the same with the paint effect but im guessing so but this involves storing alot of data.

Just a thought as to why there might be such a large difference between your different projects.

    Chris
