I suppose your looking for the ‘difference matte’ effect under keying. However I have never had any real acceptable results using this. I’ll cross my fingers for you.

Animating masks is the better way to go, I agree.

AE does not read z-depth info (CS3 at least). However, a grayscale depth image can be used as blur matte using the ‘Lens Blur’ effect.

How about applying a mask on the shore layer instead?

Well, if the orientation of the layer you want to land on is (0,0,0) then it’s pretty simple.

    – Final camera position will be identical to the position of the layer you want to land on, minus the zoom of the camera on the z-axis. (Look in the camera settings dialog box and find the zoom amount in pixels.) So if the layer is:

    position(3500, 360, 5400),

and your zoom amount is 2000, the camera position would be

    position(3500, 360, 3400).

    – Final POI will be identical to the layer’s position.

#1: Haven’t tried SP3 either. Is there a reason to update? I’d rather hold off until forced to do so.

#2: You must be talking about ‘File> Export Timeline> Movie’, right? How in 6.5 is there any other way to save a video clip? And just like in 6.5, you can export in CS3 via ‘File> Export> Movie’.

Here’s some advice. Don’t use a VIDEO app to do AUDIO mixing. Use Adobe Audition to make the final mixdown.

Is the starfield 3d or just a 2d background? You know stars are generally in the tens of lightyears apart. That’s 58,656,960,000,000 miles between them more or less. 3d is not very realistic, as traveling through space will not produce paralax.

So, why not just use a NASA image from their website? Use it as a background projection in Maya, or use the Maya camera info to make the background projection in AE.

  • How about calling it the “poor-man’s-timelapse” technique?!! lol

April 2, 2009 at 5:42 pm in reply to: Re-link video with audio

In cs3: With the cti over the orphaned audio clip, and its corresponding audio track highlighted, press ‘M’ for match frame. In the source monitor, the original footage will appear with the audio in/out points set to “match” the timeline clip. You need to reset the video in/out points by going to the audio in point and setting a master in ‘I’, and going to the audio out point and setting a master out ‘O’. Now you can drag and replace the clip with its video track attatched.

Side note: Going to the audio in/out points in the source monitor requires you to right click the source cti and choose ‘Goto clip marker > audio in’. If you only have a few clips to re-link this won’t be a problem. But if you have many clips to alter, I suggest creating keyboard shortcuts in the preference menu. I use this all the time and mapped the [,] keys for video in/out, and shift+[,] for audio in/out.
