I think you’re talking about the select track tool -(Keyboard shortcut “a” as Jon pointed out.) Yes, the select track tool from 6.5 is still in CS3, but it is defaulted to just select a single track. If you hold down the shift key when using it, it will become the double arrow and select all tracks and you can move them around like 6.5.

I had the same problem as you in this shot, and ended up artificially zooming. No need to reshoot. The exact instant prior to the zoom, I froze the magazine shot and scaled the layer. The parented insert of the girl came along for the ride. No need to track.

Is there a reason you aren’t converting to PCM .wav? Premiere does much better with uncompressed formats, I’ve found.

Or use the ‘fill left’ or ‘fill right’ effect on the audio clips.

Does the zoom have to bee that slow? Much easier would be to artificially zoom, by scaling the newspaper layer with the video insert parented to it. Motion blur would hide any scale artifacts.
Otherwise, how about using a script to average out multiple instances of tracking data?

AE does not read z channel info. You need to render out a depth pass in Maya and use it in conjunction with the CC lens blur effect in AE.

How about taking a picture of a/the TV while it is off. Then just roto the shape of the entire screen and add blend to your new video layer.

If all your clips are in the project panel, you can automate them to the sequence and the default transition will be applied automatically.
If your cuts are already on the timeine, you’ll have to add the dissolves manually. But that’s really not a big deal if you use the keyboard shortcuts. You navigate through the timeline with the page up/down keys and hit CTRL+D at each cut to apply the video transition. I actually changed the default shortcut to ‘E’ on my system which makes it a bit easier.

With college starting in 3 years, if this is a career path he is interested in, then why not give him a head start!? Try checking for previous releases of After Effects (7.0 or 6.5), i’m sure they are much cheaper – and for a beginner there is no substantial difference.
Soon you may need an editing program also! 🙂
