Ok So here is the issue.

I am rendering out a STILL image in Maya of some water drops. I am rendering out with the Z-depth channel render box selected. I have tried multiple file types of this saved image inside of AE (softimage files, .RLA, .iff’s) everything. And yet when I use the 3d Channel effects and changing the settings drastically NOTHING happens. I have been trying to solve the problem but nothing is happening for me. THe depth information is stored in .rla’s and such but AE won’t use it or i’m doing something wrong.

Apparently some people are just rendering out grayscale images out of maya but I still don’t see you can get a grayscale image to act as z-depth information inside of AE.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    THank you

AE does not read z-depth info (CS3 at least). However, a grayscale depth image can be used as blur matte using the ‘Lens Blur’ effect.
