Footage shot at 24p should be captured at 720 24p. Offspeed footage needs to be captured at 720 60p. To see the speed effect, you need to convert the footage using the frame rate converter. A new file will be created which can be dropped into your 24p timeline.

You will edit in a 24p timeline.

Considering a large number of Varicam owners use Final Cut Pro, a Mac version should be a priority.

Many thanks to all of the instructors at Varicamp Seattle. It was a fun three days, with lots of useful info. If anyone is considering attending, I highly recommend it. If you own a Varicam, or rent often, it is well worth your time and money. Good for post production folks too!

I plan to attend the advanced course once it is announced.

Be sure that your 1200a is connected to it’s own firewire bus, preferably the Apple factory bus in the rear of the computer. If you are capturing to a firewire 800 drive, it needs to be on its own INDEPENDENT firewire bus… you may need to install a seperate firewire card.

Never capture to the internal drive which shares the OS.

    Here is a helpful site:

Dropped frames could also indicate an impropperly set up deck. Here is a site with the propper settings:

Also, when capturing 720 60p material for conversion, you must be in easy set-up 720 60p. However, to edit the material, you must be in 720 24p.

    Good Luck,

Two progressive frames. It has the appearance of 60i video without the interlacing issues. This is why sports producers love 60p.

Slow mo only applies when the footage is converted to play back at 24 or 30 frames.

    No bollocks.

60p would be a better match for 60i 1080. It will transcode nicely to 1080.

It has been my experience that shooting with the shutter off produces too much motion blur. The effect is a dull looking image. I prefer at least 180 degree shutter at all times. The only time I use a longer shutter time is when I need more exposure.

My 2 cents… your mileage will vary…. test, test, test!

From what I understand, Panasonic had to redesign the Varicam due to certain key parts no longer being available. Welcome to the world of manufacturing.

Why does everybody want somthing for nothing? Broadcast quality gear is expensive for a reason: It’s reliable, and durable.

It seems that some video shooters have yet to find a cheaper camera to shoot their next breakthough project with. Infact, if the manufacturers paid them to use it, it would still be too expensive.

    Rant over.
