Over FW or HDSDI?
Over FW you will only be able to capture the offspeed footage at 720p60. Then process the file in the software FRC.
Products like the Kona 2 and Kona LH have prebuilt easy set ups that have the ability to extract the offspeed flagged frames properly via HDSDI. This hardware based process allows the user to capture the offspeed content as a
de-compressed video stream when needed for graphics and color correction. These boards also have the ability to re-compress the HDSDI video stream back to the DVCProHD codec when you only have access to decks such as AJHD-1700 or other older Panasonic DVCproHD decks that do not have FW connections.

October 12, 2005 at 3:56 amThanks for the info Gary.
I have 24p and off-frame Varicam footage that was captured onto a firewire drive using the 720p 60 easy setup. I was told that I should also use this setup for my fcp project. I have set up and logged my footage this way but the video rate shows as 59.94 not 23.98. Reading about other work flows ala the Ken Stone site I see that I should have captured and set up my FCP project using the 720p 24 easy setup. It says that my video rate should be at 23.98. Do I need to recapture using the 720p 24 setup to get the 24p look? OR can I edit with what I have and pull frames later?
My delivery is DVD.

October 12, 2005 at 1:47 pmFootage shot at 24p should be captured at 720 24p. Offspeed footage needs to be captured at 720 60p. To see the speed effect, you need to convert the footage using the frame rate converter. A new file will be created which can be dropped into your 24p timeline.
You will edit in a 24p timeline.

October 12, 2005 at 5:49 pmThanks Chris…so I should recapture? I cannot convert the 24p footage that I have captured with the 60p easy setup? I have already began to edit with this footage so it’s going to be a bit of a chore to start over with 4 hours of footage that has already been logged, subclipped and edited.

October 12, 2005 at 8:07 pmYes and no. Your 24p footage has the 24p look at 60p (2:3 pulldown-like). You could frame rate convert your off speed footage, lay the effects back to tape, then re-import back at 720 60p. This would allow you to edit without having to render off speed clips in your 720 60p timeline.
Otherwise, start from scratch and edit in 720 24p.

October 12, 2005 at 11:15 pmThe offspeed footage was converted using the FRC and also registers at the 59.94 video rate in the browser (along with the 24p footage that was brought in with the 720 60p easy setup) and looks OK. We overcranked at 48fps and it seems to look appropriate. So maybe I’m good to go without laying back to tape as you suggest? I appreciate your help!
