    Firewire is voo doo. You are better off going HD-SDI into KONA or Blackmagic which can read an covert flagged footage.

    You should consider carrying “all risk” insurance which covers 3rd party shippers, ect. There are too many “grey” situations in which an insurance company can withhold payment on a claim. I prefer to carry coverage which covers everthing, including terrorism.

    When I ship gear for service, I include a return waybill addressed to my local FedEx/UPS station with a HOLD FOR PICKUP. That way I know it’s not going to be left on my door step. I had a situation several years ago when FedEx claimed they left my Aaton XTR at the door step… the camera mysteriously appeared the next day. You can never be too careful.

    I assume you carry insurance on this camera. Propper “all risk” coverage covers shipping UPS/Fed Ex/ ect.

    You need an x-raid or other fiber raid to edit uncompressed HD. A powerbook can edit 720 24p in the DVCPROHD codec from a firewire 800 drive.
    Uncompressed HD is only really feasible on a G5, with duel processors.

    When you downcovert to SD 60i, there are no progressive frames. If you load footage in HD 60p, you are adding redundant frames and wasting disk space. I believe Avid does offer the ability to edit natitve DVCPRO HD at 24p. Check with them. When you edit in the naitive codec, you save even more disk space.

    Advanced pulldown only refers to cameras like the DVX100, SDX900, and the Canon XL2. The Varicam offers no such pulldown cadence. If you downconvert in the 1200a, a standard pulldown will be created for the 60i footage. If you bring your footage in HD at 60p, the redundant frames will creat the look of a standard pulldown. This is, however, a waste of hard drive space.

    Have you considered editing on Final Cut Pro? Much better support for DVCPRO HD, and you can edit in 24p and take advantage of the variable frame rates. Some versions of Avid support DVCPRO HD at 24 and 30.

    The waveform is good for field production to make sure you are in the range. Anyone experienced with a waveform should have no problems. The cinegamma correction on the monitor is ONLY for when you are shooting for a film out and the camera is set at 500% dynamic range, and 45 on the master gamma. If you are shooting for broadcast, keep it in the standard gamma setting.

    I orderd my 1700w yesterday… I look forward to seeing it soon. Great price for a 17″ broadcast monitor!

  • I can imagine that rental cameras have much shorter head life. Rental customers probably leave the heads “on” all of the time. I am very judicious about making sure my Varicam is in the “save” mode when I am not recording.
