The downlaodable frame rate converter only works with native footage imported via firewire from the 1200a. It will not convert footage captured HD-SDI. You will need a KONA2 or LH to capture HID-SDI. Both cards offer frame rate conversion.

HD focus is tough. It is either right on, or not. The main issue with HD is backfocus. Be sure to check everyday as temperature changes can effect backfocus. Other issues could be the projector you are viewing. It is HD? Do you have good footage from the Varicam to compare? Does the footage look sharp on a production monitor?
Other issue could be detail settings. This is subjective, but it is detail turned off? This could render a softer look to the footage.

Apple / Panasonic FRC software for FInal Cut Pro is only good with single frame rates. It will not work with ramps. You must use a hardware based frame rate converter like:
Black Magic Card
AJA card
Pansonic Frame Rate Conveter BoxThere are several other high end edit systems which can read the flags in real time and would have no probelm with ramps.

If using FCP 4.5, be sure DVCPRO HD components are installed.
DV compression not worth it… stick to 720 24p (40mbs vs 25mbs for DV).
Buy another firewire drive… they are cheap.

Edit firewire HD 720 24p…. Don’t bother with DV, not worth it. Stay HD.

This site will answer 90% of your questions:

Offspped material needs to be captured seperately. Never capture camera bars as they are always 1 fps and will throw off your capture preset.
Be sure to use a dedicated firewire bus for the 1200a if you are capturing to a firewire 800 drive. No other firewire devices can be connected/operating during capture. Never capture to the internal drive which shares the OS.

We need a dedicated web site with complete workflow info. Anyone care to publish one?

October 17, 2005 at 3:27 pm in reply to: Offline/Online w/ 720p24fps HD Varicam in FCP HD?Don’t bother with DV compression. You can edit 720 24p HD on a powerbook (only 40mbs). The DVCRPOHD compression is very easy to work with, and you get to edit in HD!
Offline is becomming a thing of the past.

I just attended the Varicam in Seattle, and it was a very valuable experience. I think a mini camp for the HVX would be equally valuable.
An instructional DVD or dedicated web site would also be excellent. Given the number of these cameras which Panasonic hopes to sell, perhaps a DVD would make more sense. I wish there was something like that for DVCPRO HD/FCP post workflow. I spend a lot of time training folks on workflow. It would be great if they could just buy a DVD or go to a web site with all the answers.
People are thirsty for information about all this stuff. Any support helps!

Yes and no. Your 24p footage has the 24p look at 60p (2:3 pulldown-like). You could frame rate convert your off speed footage, lay the effects back to tape, then re-import back at 720 60p. This would allow you to edit without having to render off speed clips in your 720 60p timeline.
Otherwise, start from scratch and edit in 720 24p.
