Thanks Craig. I checked this out and I’m unclear as to whether we apply this to the clip on our end or if this is something the client has to purchase in order to view our clips. If it’s the latter, I would think that Windows Media might be the better option.

From what I understand, the XDCAM codec comes with FCP6. PCs don’t have it. My PC friends tell me that their XDCAM projects look great in Windows Media. so I’m considering getting the HD version of Flip4Mac so I can do that.

Try Best Quality 2-pass VBR; 4.6 avg. & 6.0 max bit-rate with Dolby (AC3) audio.

Oh, I get it. You said in your prior post that you were exporting to ProRes HD, not downscaling to SD.
“When I have my ProRes HD ready, I drop it in a SD sequence.”
I exported to ProRes HD. That’s probably why it took so long and the file size was so huge. -

Wow, what am I missing here. First-of-all, I tried exporting a 3-minute 720p project to Pro-Res, and it took about 30 minutes on my Mac Pro, so I don’t see the time savings here. Also, it produced a huge file. Why not just export the HD timeline directly to Compressor, or export a QT reference movie and drop that into Compressor? No need to ever go to DV, and I get excellent results this way? Why all the different steps?

Am I hearing what I think I am hearing? 45 hours to encode a 90 min. program?

Firstly, for a 30 min. project, you’ll probably get better results by using “Fastest Encode” and setting the bit-rate to CBR at a high bit-rate such as 7-7.5. This way, the entire program is encoded at the maximum bit-rate instead of dropping to a lower bit-rate for certain passages. “Best Quality” is overkill for anything shorter than 60 minutes, it takes longer, and the results are usually poorer.

Did you try doing the encoding in Compressor, and just using Toast for authoring & burning?

If you collapse the multiclip, you don’t need to render, and you can go back later and make changes by uncollapsing.
