  • Using Compressor to create best DVD quality for HD project

Posted by Anna Heuss on November 7, 2008 at 2:26 pm

    Hi,

My FCP project is now at uncompressed 10bit (originally filmed on dvcpro HD with 1080p25) and I was wondering how I should export it to get the best possible result on DVD? I was told to best use compressor with the Best Quality 90minutes preset, as my film is 30 minutes long, but is this really the best method? I’ve done a test and the quality isn’t tooooo amazing I thought. How did the people from Star Wars make their DVD look HD as well? (I haven’t seen it on DVD, but I’m sure it looked a lot better than what I have here).

Any tips would be much appreciated!

    Hi Anna,
The answer about how to make a DVD from an HD source is in the FAQ.
To make a god DVD from a 30 minutes film is not that difficult. The challenge is to put two hours film with five different language and four subtitles channels keeping good quality. There are some applications better suited than Compressor to do that. You can have a look to BitVice or Cinemacraft.

Firstly, for a 30 min. project, you’ll probably get better results by using “Fastest Encode” and setting the bit-rate to CBR at a high bit-rate such as 7-7.5. This way, the entire program is encoded at the maximum bit-rate instead of dropping to a lower bit-rate for certain passages. “Best Quality” is overkill for anything shorter than 60 minutes, it takes longer, and the results are usually poorer.

    Hi Chris,
This I have really to try it. Normally my clips are no longer than 30 minutes, and I’m only using the Fast setups when I have to send a rough copy to the clients. I’ve never been happy with the picture, perhaps because I haven’t rise the data rate as you suggest.
I’m getting very good results with Compressor by using Short/Open GOPs and double pass, but I will try your suggestion.

    Anna,

I get better quality encodes out of Episode than Compressor. Others swear by Bit Vice.

    Have a wonderful day.
