Shane,
You’re in LA right?
I believe Walter is in the Atlanta region – so I was wondering if the cost was lower down south.

[walter biscardi] “they charge a very reasonable rate for their daVinci suites. “
I’m curious what’s a reasonable rate? $150/hr?

[David Roth Weiss] “A really good professional colorist working on a DiVinci will undoubtedly produce the very best product possible, saving a great deal of time in the process, because they have the knowledge, the tools, and most importantly, realtime capabilities that FCP simply doesn’t have. However, these luxuries do cost a little extra… I always do tape to tape color correction on DiVinci when I can, but the rest of the time I do it myself in FCP. Is there a difference??? You bet…”
Cost a little more?? I would say it costs a whole lot more. How much would an DiVinci session cost per hour? I would say a day of experienced online FCP session would cost about 3 hours of DiVinci time with operator.
I completely agree with you and Walter regarding the level of output quality that these systems can provide. But unless it’s a network show ie CSI, Law and Order, Monk, etc, most cable channel docs and series’ budget don’t even come close to be able to afford a DiVinci session. I’ve edited shows for PBS, Animal Planet, MTV and the budget doesn’t even entertain the idea of a Divinci session for even 5 seconds.

The next version of iChat in 10.5 is supposed to be able to share your screen with a viewer. As well as giving control to the viewer. You can potentially edit on someone else’s machine across the world – as long as they give you the control.
I’m dying to use this feature so I can troubleshoot my parent’s Mac and actually see their screen.

Ditto on Shane’s post. If you have 1.3 TB around. The only downside is if you need DVDs for reviews. The compresseion will take longer than if you were using DV downconverts. I would not go below DV25.

A common method is to render out of AE in Animation codec as this will give you the best result but it will need to be rendered in FCP. You can render out to Uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2 so you won’t have to render in the FCP timeline. See if if you can tell the difference in quality and then decide which road to take.

January 12, 2007 at 10:04 pm in reply to: A way to see if clips in bins have been used in a sequence? Thanks. I thought there was a better way. Maybe I was thinking of Premiere. I think they have a dedicated “used” column in their version of the bins.
Thanks again. Your mention will do for the time being.

So you’re saying that your first few attempts did not work was because each clip did not have a tape name (source) and not because you had inappropriate settings in Media Manager.

[durisdeer] “1. Moved the sequence to a new folder.
2. Seleceted the seqeuce, ‘Made Sequence clips independent’
3. set media manager to ‘Create offline'”check the box – Delete Unused Media from duplicated items.
check Handles – type in handles. That is the way to do it. It has worked about 1000 times for me.

[John Steventon] “The temptation to point out that your analogy makes Avid the simpler, easier system to use is… just… too… strong…”
On the surface, yes, my post does seem that way but I was more referring to whatever system you’ve spent years on to be the Automatic.
If you’ve spent years on a abacus, you’ll feel it’s the simplest thing in the world to use.
I started on an Avid for 3 years, then FCP for 6, and now back to Avid for my current job. It’s a bit rough and tough and I’m not in love with the Avid but I don’t give the attitude of “What’s wrong with Avid?!?” like the original poster. It’s like going to someone’s house and point out all the bad things about their house and then complain that people are sooooo sensitive about receiving critiques. He’s not criticizing, he’s whining and pi$$ing on your front door.
I think the responses he got were way more generous than he should’ve with his initial tone. There’s no obligation to help anyone here. We do it for free and on our own busy schedules. Be nice, be courteous, be grateful. And keep his snide attitude to himself.
