As a 10 year veteran of AVID editing who has just purchased his first FCP system, I am so far very impressed with Final Cut’s capabilities. I am trying to figure out the best After Effects render settings when I am working with NTSC 525/8 bit video. I’ve tried using MJPEG-A and uncompressed Quicktimes, but they both need to be rendered in FCP. The FCP is using the Kona LHe card, and I am wondering if there is a way to create a Quicktime that does not need to be rendered when imported into the FCP?

FCP must have all video in the same codec as the sequence to avoid rendering. So, if you render your QT with the same codec setting as your FCP sequence, it’ll drop right in with no render on the timeline. If you’re doing the After Effects on the same machine, the codecs are already there. Supply more detail on your sequence settings if you need more info.

Thats one of the cool things about FCP compared to Avid. You don’t need to render qt files when you import footage. As long as your timeline is using the same codec settings as the footage you will not have to render. Uncompressed 8bit is piece of cake. Apple-0 buttons will let you change timeline settings. (remember to do this BEFORE you insert the footage..)

A common method is to render out of AE in Animation codec as this will give you the best result but it will need to be rendered in FCP. You can render out to Uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2 so you won’t have to render in the FCP timeline. See if if you can tell the difference in quality and then decide which road to take.

Thanks for the help. I forgot to mention that I am running AE on a separate Windows machine. I realized that the mistake I was making was rendering a quicktime movie with the compressor set to “none”. While poking around Aja’s website, I located their codecs, downloaded and installed on the Windows box, re-rendered in the “2yuv” codec, and it worked great. Thanks again!
