I’m trying to effectively ‘decompose’ a very simple sequence in FCP, and having no luck. I’ve read the manual, I’ve read the Ken Stone article, I’ve stepped and walked through all the hoops…

It’s a sequence that’s 1’07” (PAL) with only three cuts, from an original source that is 12’43”. All I want to do is redigitise just the 1’07” (probably 1’15” with mixes and handles that I need, not the original 12’43”

Batch digitize: digitizes the whole clip – 12’43”
Media manager: every single option I’ve tried wants to make 12’43” Here’s what I’ve done:

    1. Moved the sequence to a new folder.
    2. Seleceted the seqeuce, ‘Made Sequence clips independent’
    3. set media manager to ‘Create offline’

No matter which of the other tick-boxes in the media manager I press, the ‘modified’ still comes up as 12’43” when it should be 1’07”, and with a start TC of 00:00:00:00 which isn’t on the tape.

I know there are different ways of approaching this – given the time I’ve spent I could have hired an Egyptian scribe to carve an EDL into a stone tablet, and got minions to carry this across the room on a scarlet cushion to the Other FCP.. but this is a test so I can do this for more complex jobs in future, and it’s driving me round the bend.

    Any help deeply appreciated, Robbie.

Do all your source items have a proper reel number?

Items without reel numbers (or reel numbers with gibberish characters) are treated like imported animation files and will not be trimmed.

Which version of FCP are you using. The latest one seems to have solved most of these Media Manager oddities.

[durisdeer] “1. Moved the sequence to a new folder.
    2. Seleceted the seqeuce, ‘Made Sequence clips independent’
    3. set media manager to ‘Create offline'”

check the box – Delete Unused Media from duplicated items.
check Handles – type in handles.

That is the way to do it. It has worked about 1000 times for me.

*coughs* er, OK.. the source now has a reel number and it all works fine. Strangely, it still works when I delete the reel number.

Chi-Ho, thanks but I tried that already.

I think that once you add a reel number some sort of flag is put on the file that Media Manager recognizes, so even if you delete the number, the flag remains.

So you’re saying that your first few attempts did not work was because each clip did not have a tape name (source) and not because you had inappropriate settings in Media Manager.
