    Peter,

Would it be possible for you to buy a new non-upgrade US version from now and just keep upgrading it with US versions? The same with FCP Studio and etc. The machines aren’t rigged for US/EU models are they because I thought the power supply was dual voltage or wattage or whatever it’s called?

  • Oh. Did I leave out the part where they’re women? Freudian Slip.

  • And it would be even nicer if all the FCP programming teams were hot smart bikini models who will make house calls once a month.

    Just messing with you.

I would be nice but one keystroke to select a clip would IMO only work when you only have one track. Cuz one single keystroke can’t control which track so as soon as you have two tracks, you’ll either have to click something or have to hit at least one more keystroke – which is pretty much what is the current behavior. But yes, I agree, if they can find a way to use one keystroke to select a clip on any track – that would be awesome.

If you just want to open a clip in the viewer quickly, you can set your gang sync button to OPEN and every clip the playhead lands on, it will open that clip in the viewer. A lot of colorists will use this so they don’t have to double click every single clip in the timeline.

  • Yes. Mark In and Out on a clip or part of a clip and then hit Option-A. This is subjected to autoselect buttons if you have multiple tracks. The best way to look for a keyboard shortcut is to use the keyboard layout or button list. You can search for existing shortcuts in either of these two windows ie. type in “select” and it’ll reveal all the select shortcuts. Option A is listed as Select from In to Out, not select clip since you can use this to select part of a clip or multiple clips.

You don’t need to separate your bins into different projects. It’s the sequences that inflate project size. You can move older sequences into a different project to decrease your project size. I’ve worked on reality shows with 250 hr of footage and and the autosaves for a project of this size is never more than 2-3 seconds.

[cls105] “I spent 1k for a decklink card (now i regret not getting aja) instead of spending 25 thousand on an avid adrenaline. I still think that most of the advantages are in the cheap hardware though, the software in my opinion needs a boost.”

Well, it’s the FCP software that is written to take advantage of these cards. These cards just don’t work by themselves when you plug them in. I think you are short changing the software in that sense. Avid doesn’t work with these cards and probably never will in my lifetime.

People will never be satisfied with software. When FCP can handle 9 streams of UC 1080i multicam, people will still complain that it doesn’t get enough realtime with UC HD 4:4:4 or the ViperCam!

If your chief areas of improvement are the amount of time to open a project and to autosave, then the FCP team ain’t doing that bad.

It’s one royal pain to have to wait for it when you are trying

  • It’s a nice monitor but the Dell 30″ is also a good deal. If you don’t need firewire ports on the monitor, look into the Dell.

I would recommend taking the course. I’m an editor but also an Apple Certified FCP Trainer. If you take the class at a reputable place from an experienced trainer, the money is completely worth it. Here’s what the class would get you that you can’t from a book by yourself – human interaction.

    1) If you get stuck, you can ask for immediate human help. You don’t have to figure it out, you don’t have to post online and perhaps wait hours for help.

    2) You can ask related questions. The book will show you how to accomplished A but it won’t tell you how to accomplish A-1, or A-2 or A-3.

    3) The book doesn’t cover technical issues. It’s main concern is operating FCP. But what if you have a question regarding workflow or formats or etc. An experienced FCP trainer can answer that for you.

    4) You may actually click with your peers or instructor that may lead to job leads or friendship. I have made a few friends from teaching these classes and I’ve help a few people get jobs as well. Obviously, this is not a guarantee and is rare but it’s possible.

While the book is decent. It is obviously just a book. It can’t compare with having a live instructor. Also you wouldn’t believe how many phone calls I get from people who want to hire me to consult on their project or their system, which they built or started with their limited self taught knowledge. They get themselves into a bind and they hire me at an hourly consulting rate for a day or two which quickly adds up to a whole class or even more.

I’ve been freelancing as an editor and been teaching FCP for about the past seven years and I’ve come to the conclusion that while it’s a heavy investment in classes, the interaction is worth it every time.

This is my opinion. Good luck with your decision.

  • I may be conditioned to 24fps. But when you watch a film in the theater, do you really see a flawed image and wish it’s in 30fps?

  • I was trying to inject a bit of humor here. But it prob came off as sarcasm instead. My bad.
