  • Is there a way to highlight a clip without clicking with the mouse?

Posted by Andreas Karoliussen on March 22, 2007 at 11:39 am

    Hi,

Im working as much as I can using keyboard in Final Cut and have found shortcuts for almost everything however:
-Is there a way to highlight a clip in the timeline without clicking with the mouse?
-Is there a way to jump selection from clip to clip in the timeline?
Ive tried marking a clip with In Out and deleting it for so to paste it in again; then it is highlighted, however thats a realy slow method…

    Any ideas?

    Thank you,
    Andreas

Your first question is one that I have been asking myself for a long time. For the second question you can use the up and down arrows.

I don’t really see how there can be a faster method than a single click to select a clip with a mouse. Sorry. Not a keyboard purist. I use a keyboard when it’s less clicks/strokes, and a mouse when it’s less clicks or strokes.

Well, when I’m doing a lot of things with my keyboard, it is sort of annoying that I have to go back to my mouse just for highlighting a clip

Yes. Mark In and Out on a clip or part of a clip and then hit Option-A. This is subjected to autoselect buttons if you have multiple tracks. The best way to look for a keyboard shortcut is to use the keyboard layout or button list. You can search for existing shortcuts in either of these two windows ie. type in “select” and it’ll reveal all the select shortcuts. Option A is listed as Select from In to Out, not select clip since you can use this to select part of a clip or multiple clips.

But wouldn’t it be nice if I could highlight a clip with one button, and then work with it after pushing the enter button?? Would make work much smoother

And it would be even nicer if all the FCP programming teams were hot smart bikini models who will make house calls once a month.

    Just messing with you.

I would be nice but one keystroke to select a clip would IMO only work when you only have one track. Cuz one single keystroke can’t control which track so as soon as you have two tracks, you’ll either have to click something or have to hit at least one more keystroke – which is pretty much what is the current behavior. But yes, I agree, if they can find a way to use one keystroke to select a clip on any track – that would be awesome.

If you just want to open a clip in the viewer quickly, you can set your gang sync button to OPEN and every clip the playhead lands on, it will open that clip in the viewer. A lot of colorists will use this so they don’t have to double click every single clip in the timeline.

Start using a tablet and you’ll be even more efficient. I haven’t used a mouse to edit in probably 8 years or so and it’s much faster for me than using just a keyboard or a combination of mouse / keyboard.

I don’t think that would work for me. Who wants mostly guys showing up at your door once a month wearing bikinis. Ewww. Besides, what would the neighbours think?
