I have been seriously thinking about taking a FCP course somewhere in the bay area in the next few months, and my investigations have found a few places that offer certified FCP training courses. The one closest to me offers the 100, 200 and 300 classes, and after reading about them and evaluating my own experience with the program, I called to sign up for the 200 class. I was told that I need to take the 100 class or pass an exam that costs 175 dollars. These classes are not cheap, and at this point I am not interested in becoming a certified FCP trainer, but am hungry to learn more.

I am not really sure I want to pay 175 dollars on top of the 900 dollars the class costs to qualify for the 200 class. My fear is that if I take the 100 class I will be information that I already know.

I have been working with FCP since version 1, and have read manuals and a book (the name escapes me.) and would just hate to pay 900 bucks to sit and listen to someone tell me how to open the log and capture window. Any recommendations on classes, teachers, workshops would be greatly appreciated.

PS I watched Walter Biscardi’s travel mattes tutorials and had a great time walter! Feel like were old friends now. ha! Great tutorials. Any more in store?

[zeech26] “I was told that I need to take the 100 class or pass an exam that costs 175 dollars.”

When I first inquired about Apple Pro training here in the Vancouver, Canada area I was informed that the FCP 100 and 200 classes covered the exact same stuff. The only difference was the FCP 100 is done over a 3 day period and the 200 class is over a 5 day period. I decided on the 200 class. Now, I don’t know if the different course descriptions between what you were told and what I was told is just a local thing but it’s probably worth it for you to get an official response from Apple Inc. I don’t think that Apple would have different entrance qualifications depending on geographical area.

I think you should pay yourself 900 dollars to go through the manual. It will take more than five days, but then you’re getting paid for it.

Then take your 900 bucks and buy After Effects professional or a Mackie Control Universal or Boris Red.

    Hi Colin,

I’d been using FCP for the last 4 years or so but it was one of those things where you just learn enough to get done what you want to do and leave it at that, doing things the same way all the time. I wanted to learn to work smarter and faster and the FCP 200 course is very beneficial in that regard.

I highly recommend the course at Emily Carr. Johnathan Tyrrell is a first class teacher and makes learning FCP a blast. I also took the Motion 200 course and learned a ton in the 3 days. I’m still considering doing the upcoming course there for advanced colour correction for FCP which is also an accredited 3 day course.

Yup. Deadlines. That’s why I’m still up at this hour: have a deadline for Sunday night. I’m exporting 2 – 2.5 hour sequences which I’m setting up for encoding before I grab some sack time.
