August 22, 2007 at 7:40 pm in reply to: Chryon Duet — um, yeah, like I’ve ever seen one!If you are going to be doing a lot of live broadcast work, there really isn’t anything that compares to the Chyron at this time, due to the speed of updating graphics in a hurry. Keep in mind the Chyron starting with the Infinit! has been based on a platform compatible to MAC’s. I have seen attempts to work with many other systems and seems most everyone comes back to the Chyron, especially in sports invironments.

August 22, 2007 at 2:27 pm in reply to: Chryon Duet — um, yeah, like I’ve ever seen one!I have worked with the Chyron off and on for many years. I haven’t had an opportunity to work with the Duet. Chyron is a very intimidating box, until you break through the skin and see how it is working, then you will grow to love it. It has been great for broadcast because of it’s speed. If you are a fast typist, you probably won’t do as well, I know that sounds strange, but the machine does things in a manner that fast typing is not an asset. The beauty is the ability to create format pages that all you do is fill in the fields with new graphics and the graphics come out correct color, size, positioning, etc.
If you have a facility nearby that has any of the chyron products that will show you the fundamentals, you will be able to squeeze by. The best way to actually learn the machine is the Chyron school.Charlie

Just as a point of reference, We have a high school here in Las Vegas that has had an excellent TV facility. Their equipment may not have been the best in some instances. The teacher that was there for many years, took a part time job as a cameraman at a local TV station during the summer, working summer vacation relief. This gave him the opportunity to keep up with the real world of Broadcast TV.
When I have hired people, I went to him for recommendations of his past students. I preferred them well above UNLV’s TV graduates with degrees. In most instances their knowledge of Broadcast Television was far above the University Graduates.
He got his equipment from local TV stations, production houses, and even UNLV as they upgraded he got one generation down. really not bad for a high school.Good luck with your classes and I hope you keep going.

thanx Grinner,
I didn’t think so, but this week has been such a mess I thought I better make sure. I never consider myself above asking dumb questions. As I always say, the only dumb question is the one not asked.

One thing to remember is that the AFM tracks can only be recorded while recording video, since the tracks are located on the drum not the audio stack.

I send things out quite often in anamorphic, and receive the same. Works fine. Keeping in mind this is SD 16X9 not HD.

Check out http://www.adtecinc.com they have an mpg player that interrupts the signal to play mpgs internally. Keep in mind these usually use the signal sent from teh originator to trigger the switch. these signals can sometimes be blocked by the cable company or you may have to get a license from teh cable company to use this interruption. the beauty part is that it is automatic, you don’t have to have someone there switching it. Call Ron Johnsoon, tell him Charlie King sent you, but only do it if you have a couple hours available to allow him to talk. He does love to talk.

Mark,
Keep in mind many of those who profess to be broadcast experts, aren’t.
When you say the background banner behind the text is blocky. I presume you are referring to a texture. Textures are nice so long as they don’t make the text difficult to read. That said, all else Grinner said applies.Charlie

[jeditdv] “Just to confirm, you ARE use the EXTERNAL capture program?”
Now that you brought it up, I found where to look for it. The check box was unchecked. Many times it is the simple things we overlook.
The deck is out on another job today, so it will be tomorrow before I can check that out, to see if it worked.Thank you guys for your help.
