Hello I work with a guy who is constantly having me
rework all lower thirds that I create either in
    after effects, photoshop,etc
My point is he always hides behind
“that is what is done on
    television”
can anyone point me toward any literature, or
does anyone know if there is a certain way to do it..
I am content being wrong, I just want the right answer..

    what’s the question?
as long as everything is legal, there are no rules. They shouldnt be big enough to touch the face of who is talking but everything else is completely subjective. If you have a mentor that shuts you out rather than explain things, you prolly need a new mentor.

Well his main concern is that the art we are using
to layer under the text is “blocky” which to us (media dept.)
is frustrating we as an organization are new to broadcast
and he has self proclaimed himself as the broadcast expert.
I just wanted to know the correct answer, as to not
go against any broadcast no-nos etc… But thank you
for your response, it really helps…

    Mark,
Keep in mind many of those who profess to be broadcast experts, aren’t.
When you say the background banner behind the text is blocky. I presume you are referring to a texture. Textures are nice so long as they don’t make the text difficult to read. That said, all else Grinner said applies.
