[Nils Dorigoni] “I heard that with the beam, null to null method, the nulls get lost when moving in/out Z, which is crucial for 3D tracking.”
You’re both right and wrong in that assertion. the beam effect is indeed a 2d effect (but plexus also is).
You can howerver give the beams 3d “awareness” making the start and end points stay put with the tracked nulls and even make them change size with the distance from the camera (as plexus does automatically). See attached example
It all comes down to how many tracked nulls you’ll end up with. With a few I’d do it like that. Many more I’d probably send them to c4d and link them up there.

how are you adding the glow? by cheating some global illumination or by the post effect glow? If the latter, have you realised that the post effect analises a threshold in pixel value that computes the final effect? And as you say, you have a somehow darker texture in the text, try maybe increasing its brightness? Because it may be falling out of the threshold.
Or do the glow in post within another application, its a huge gain in options.

You may try to lower the maximum connection to 2. But if that doesn’t work, you’re out of luck. Plexus is supposed to randomly connect stuff by distance. It has no clue what you want it to look.
If you just need a few connections, use the beam effect or any of the several plugins/scripts that simplify its placement while creating a line linked by two nulls.

you need 3 passes, a two step cel shading with the sketch and toon renderer (there is plenty of tutorials on that, see greyscale gorilla and eyedesyn)
a regular standard render beauty pass with just the luminance channel on, that will give you the colors.
and a ambient occlusion pass. (that you can do with the previous pass). Save it in another sequency for better compositing control.
Just composite it all together, screen or overlay for the cel, and multiply for the OCC.

August 28, 2017 at 9:33 pm in reply to: color correcting 3d layers (cinema 4d renderer)To be honest with you I discovered from your post that AE cc17 had this cinema 4d renderer (thus my trouble understanding your post).
I’ve used cinema 4d in itself for years even when I import it to AE all my objects are done in the c4d app itself.BUT It has to be something to do with the stacking order of things. Probably effects go in a level that this “middle render engine” can’t see. That’s my guess…and I bet no one would be able to pinpoint why exactly.

August 28, 2017 at 9:11 pm in reply to: color correcting 3d layers (cinema 4d renderer)I see… Well, since you’re using shape layers. You can change this “hue” value using an expression about the same way you’d use in the hue/sat effect. Just place it into the fill color value of your shape layer.
Since the property requires a RGB imput. You should try something like
hslToRgb([thisLayer.index/10,1,.5,1]);
this would cycle to up to 10 colors… See if you can figure it out now how to get something more into what you’re going for.

Put your null inside a fracture object. Change the mode to explode segments. Add a push apart effector to this Fracture. Change the falloff to something that suits you then animate the effectors position.
I’m sure you can pull that off with other effectors too (if you don’t have R18 with the push apart)
