Which format does your video files have? “filename.mpeg or filename.mpg?

What ver of Ppro did you capture them with? I use .mpeg files made with CS3 in CS4 all the time with no problem, even mixed with BlackMagic Mjpeg.

They have a .mpeg file extension? when you say HD tapes you mean HDV? -
What version of Ppro are you using, what inputs do you have on the monitor? whats the native resolution? what resolution do you want to preview?
Some monitors have a db15 input(VGA), you can use a adapter, some have HDMI you can use a DVI to HDMI cable, if you have Ppro CS4 you can preview to an external computer monitor or TV setup as one or use somthing like a Blackmagic intensity to view previews on a external via hdmi while having two computer monitors for other tasks -

What kind of source footage do you have on the timeline? what color is the indicator on the timeline? have you tried to render the work area?

There used to be a firewire to usb adapter made by Pixela.com, I haven’t seen any for a while, what kind of laptop do you have?

Are you capturing to a custom format? I use a Pyro A/V link for analog captures, like Ann says it should be 720×480, you should use a NTSC DV preset to capture from the pyro -
Try a equalizer and play with it, see if you can determine where in the range the sound you don’t like is coming by raising or lowering the low, mid, and high ranges
