Haven’t messed with a 230 Pana deck in a while, if I remmember correctly its basically s-video out I/O so conversion to firewire I/O should be ok for in and out. there might be a slight generation loss but small, DVCpro is basically the same as DV if captured from a deck that has firewire I/O, and for other uses in the computer you would follow a normal DV workflow your computer has plenty of horsepower for mundane tasks.The elemental acc is basically a H264 or flash accelerator

second, are you having problems with dropped frames terminating your capture or just having dropped frames?

Home premium will allow up to 16gig, if you want more, pro or ultimate will allow up to 192gig if you can afford a Mobo for it.
Pro and ultimate have a XP compatibility feature.
Premium I believe is single CPU socket with as many processor cores as you can shove into it, currently i7=8 with hyperthreading, Pro and Ultimate is dual CPU, 2 xenon i7=16 -

When you are saying 16bit are you refering to 16 bit color(high color) as 5:6:5 per channel or are you refering to 16 bit per channel or 48bit color(deep color)

Hold down the shift key when starting Ppro, hold down till the Welcome screen appears, if that doesn’t help create a new project and copy the old one into it

What settop box?? What operating system? what version of Ppro? what computers specs?

Are you trying to capture via firewire with your cam or deck with win7 ? what brand/model? what are you trying to capture, SD DV or HDV??

You can save as various flavors of DVCpro, you have to select P2 Movie, and it will save as a .MXF, I don’t know if it will do you any good.

The standalone quadro is an advantage, like mentioned Ppro CS4 likes memory, and the 64bit op system is an advantage, here is a link that has info on adobe 64bit.

Your computer has 3gigs of memory, more than likely a 1 gig chip and a 2gig chip, if you replace the 1 gig with a 4 gig(kingston $170) that will give a leg up with 6gigs, and of course a 64bit OS, Since your laptop has a built-in eSATA port that gives an advantage to add a fast external drive or drive array, One item thats handy is a USB/eSATA drive docking station, drives just plugin and are in open air for cooling, easily swapped.
