Which version of Windows 7 is best for video editing?

Home premium will allow up to 16gig, if you want more, pro or ultimate will allow up to 192gig if you can afford a Mobo for it.
Pro and ultimate have a XP compatibility feature.
Premium I believe is single CPU socket with as many processor cores as you can shove into it, currently i7=8 with hyperthreading, Pro and Ultimate is dual CPU, 2 xenon i7=16

There’s a version that’s limited to 16 GB of RAM?

Theoretically all 64 bit systems should handle the same RAM load…have our benevolent friends at Microsoft put some artificial limitation in place?

They do indeed limit RAM in software on the other versions. Ain’t Microsoft the best?

Personally, I use Ultimate x64 which does it all, but if you are worried a bit about price, grab Pro. Don’t mess with any of the others as you’ll be crippled for RAM in the future (which as x64 takes off, will be very very big in the next couple of years) and miss out on the XP mode, which will keep older tools useful.

Also, don’t go x32 as pretty much every big software maker is going 64 bit on professional applications.

My new Win 7 workstation is on its way to Launch Complex 39A. Just filling the liquid oxygen external fuel tank and topping off the solid rocket boosters. Auxiliary power units on standby. Discovery is ready for takeoff.

I’m sure by now you’ve gotten a good amount of answers, but just FYI, if you have any Windows 7 questions, the MVPs (most valued professionals) over at Microsoft Springboard site would be really happy to help you and point you to the right resources.

As for answering your questions, I would recommend Windows 7 Ultimate if you aren’t limited in budget, otherwise, the pro should be great for you too! Definitely get XP Mode, it’s perfect for older software (saved me with Pro Tools and my Mbox for music recording).
