Yes, you would set up your card’s second output as extended desktop, then tell Premiere to output to that screen in the playback settings. That will give you a full screen playback automatically.

It is not however the best way to monitor quality since the signal is usually “cleaned up” by the graphics card before it gets to the TV.

Therefore, you may not catch things such as banding, noise etc.

What version of Ppro are you using, what inputs do you have on the monitor? whats the native resolution? what resolution do you want to preview?
Some monitors have a db15 input(VGA), you can use a adapter, some have HDMI you can use a DVI to HDMI cable, if you have Ppro CS4 you can preview to an external computer monitor or TV setup as one or use somthing like a Blackmagic intensity to view previews on a external via hdmi while having two computer monitors for other tasks

I’m using premiere pro cs4 and have not purchased the monitor yet. I intend it to be a 26″ hd tv with hdmi so I can use it as a tv too.
I think my max monitor Res is 1600×900 but could be wrong. Should I avoid tv’s then and use a dedicated 2nd monitor for playback if the quality is better?

Also, if it’s any help what I’m more keen on spotting are black frames, camera jumps, stutters et. As opposed to noise.

Using in computer overlay is ok for composition and general layout and workflow preview, but to do stuff like color correcting and matching you need to use a external video display, using a video output like a BlackMagic intensity or a Matrox MX02mini and a tv monitor that can take a decent calibration, and has full resolution, you can get 1080P in 22″ and up.

Thanks again brian I’d really like to get at least 1080i on a 22″.
I’ve read up on both of those devices and am still not 100% clear on what they are!! Are they not capture devices? I take it they do more than just capture? Do you know where I can get a written beginners introduction to these devices for a total newbie? I thought it would just be a case of using the 2nd graphics card output but it seems it’s not that simple?
