With text that is not too complex you can build it by hand with cuts down the center for the straight parts plus using Edge to Spline to pull the round bits out then using the Splineknife plugin that can be had here https://www.geocities.jp/westy_net/tools/coffee/plugins/plugins006/SplineKnife1_1.html (with tweaks) to lay a cut in the center of the curvy bits. Once again not too bad with simple text, it would be a bear if it was complex. I’ll post a (silent – don’t have my mic here) tut tomorrow.

the problem is the sweep nurb is not editable so the flat texture has no ‘real’ geometry to stick to. The only thing I can think of is to apply the texture to a plane and use an Align to Spline tag to get the plane to move along the same spline you are Sweeping along.
Align to Spline doesn’t align quite the same way as the SweepNurb however and the plane isn’t always perfectly parallel to the face of the Sweep. I found it could be done by removing the one Sweep cap (not quite perfect but if viewed nearly straight on it should be not visible) or make the plane a box and use it in a Boole to make the boxes face be the face of the Sweep so it’s perfect from all angles. That nibbles a little length off the Sweep though…

it can be done with xPresso or just by keyframing the blinks for one second then Cycling the animation track for the desired number of cycles. Here’s an example of both. The xPresso has remarks in each node to (hopefully) explain what’s going on. There is probably more than one way to do it and that may not be the best…

  • I’ve been playing with the settings. It is possible to animate the values if you apply the hair with the SweepNurb selected (you don’t have to make it editable that’s just one option) *but*
    – the hair only will root where there is a positive thickness – an actual surface – if you get down to zero thickness (what looks like a spline in the viewport) hair does not root.
    – if you animate the settings of the 3DStroke then render, only hair that exists in the first frame will render. Hair won’t ‘appear’ where the stroke gains thickness unless you hit the Update Guides button in the Guides tab of the Hair object, but that resets the hair to straight (or whatever the Dynamics rest state was set to with Hair/Edit/Set As Dynamics) and it has to fall again too.
    – I modified the settings of the scale spline in the Details of the SweepNURB object. The various X and Y settings in the xPresso (CntrX, KneeX etc) are controlling the scale spline so I lifted the values of the ends of the scale spline (not controlled by the xPresso) so the Sweep always has some thickness (and can have Hair)

perhaps you are thinking of something more than I am reading into your description but it sounds like you might want to make the egg be a particle emitter rather than a deflector.

  • It looks like yes but you have to add the Hair to the SweepNurbs not the 3DStroke null. You could also make it editable of course.

A 2D file that was made to look 3D… often a problem. The ‘C’ is different from all the other letters (a chiselled bevel), it could be done (almost) with an extrude but the spline would have to trace the flat part of the C and the ‘back of the C’ (on the left) would have to have the spline touching itself for that part – then the extrude would work and create the outside – however getting a spline to align with itself like that is tough (not impossible though).
The other letters can’t be done the same way since they look like they are done in a different 2D technique the “3D fake drop shadow” kind of thing. Because it’s asymmetrical you can’t just use an extrude (unless you tilt them to the camera) you’d have to make 2 splines for each letter one for the flat ‘face’ and another for the outside shape. If you then put the front spline forward and the outside spline back then join the two with a Loft you’d have the letter. — just had a thought, maybe an extrude could work if the extrude was made to go “not straight back”, as is usual, to end up with faces that face the camera but sides and back that have the needed “drop shadow” alignment – just tried that and it doesn’t work well if the fillet is too large and it also suffers badly from true 3D – it’s obvious the letters (the drop shadow effect) are all a bit different because they are all in different positions relative to the camera, the letters in the example jpeg all have an identical 3D effect, it is possible to do that in 3D but you have to change from the perspective to the Parallel camera to do it.

If you Constrain the caps you are going to run in to limits to how far you can fillet. Take one of the crosses to the “t’s” if the fillet from the top meets the fillet from the bottom you get artifacts once they pass each other. If you don’t Constrain you don’t get artifacts (usually) but you have to accept that your text is going to get wider. If you make everything ‘skinnier’ in AI you can still end up with letters with the same (or similar) weight. Otherwise just turn off the constrain.

might be good to Lathe it with a subdivision of 8. Make it editable after you have the shape and bevel the vertical corner edges to get the smooth joins.
