Chisel Bevel Text
I am trying to figure out a way to create the look of a chiseled 3D text.
Think of the Cars Title Treatment or the Harry Potter Title Treatment.
It is not a straight extrusion with a little bevel on it. It basically comes to point in the center. Since the widths are inconsistent, you can’t just do an bevel with a deep offset because the geometry with intersect. Any thoughts on a tool or technique that can achieve this effect in 3D would be helpful.

With text that is not too complex you can build it by hand with cuts down the center for the straight parts plus using Edge to Spline to pull the round bits out then using the Splineknife plugin that can be had here https://www.geocities.jp/westy_net/tools/coffee/plugins/plugins006/SplineKnife1_1.html (with tweaks) to lay a cut in the center of the curvy bits. Once again not too bad with simple text, it would be a bear if it was complex. I’ll post a (silent – don’t have my mic here) tut tomorrow.

In addition to Brian’s method, it’s possible (but not easy) to do it with displacement. Basically you create the displacement map in PS using Inner Glow, then use it as a displacement map in Cinema.
