I’m currently running a MacPro Quad with 4 GB of RAM which I dual boot into XP Pro.
While my setup is different from the one you propose I can answer a few of your questions.
1) On Win XP AE 7, Premiere Pro run very well, fast as smoke on these machines. No tweaking RAM settings necessary. AE is much faster than on OS 10.4.9.
If your RAID 0 array was created in XP it is unlikely to work for writes on OS X though it should work for reads.
No one knows what Leopard will actually be until its released, I think the BlackMagic guys are being careful. It should work.
Yes AE 8 uses all processors (confirmed in Activity Monitor). As I understand it (I’m sure someone will correct me) AE lauches one background process per processor each uses RAM up to a 3GB limit per process. You can limit the amount of RAM in the application prefs though more physical RAM is better the process can run in less that 1 GB per processor, I set mine to 512 MB and its bloody fast.
I’m switching OS’s via bootcamp, not the most convenient — its really either/or not both at once.
Finally, I get asked this all the time, “why bother??”. I need applications that run on each OS, I prefer Final Cut (perhaps because I know it better than Premiere) and need some PC tools. I used to have 2 cpus on my desk, this has cut down on the clutter.

This is my favorite error message. It provides so much detail about the error.
I have no solution, it sometimes precedes a crash or can occur when memory is low. Have you enabled disk cacheing?

One thing you can do is render a lower resolution animated GIF, AVI or QuickTime with the same name as your template then save the render into the same folder as the templates.
So you’ll end up with “my_great_template.aet” and “my_great_template.gif”. Selecting the gif will show you the preview.
Adobe has clearly hidden the method they use to preview templates in Bridge. Just like the text animation presets that are only viewable in on-line Help.

I’m sure there’s a limit (isn’t there always?)but I’ve never encountered it. I’ve placed layers at 50,000 in Z and never had an issue.

I agree with much of what you wrote. As applications add features and become more complex a usable UI (or lack of it) becomes more important than ever.
Timelines become cluttered and visually crowded very quickly, nested comps (alt- clicking also opens these, no real need for that button…), shy layers all help. I’d like to see layer groups like Photoshop. Not nested but grouped in folders so I could drill down if I wanted without the necessity of opening a second comp/timeline.
If I can move some controls to an effects palette (oops panel), I often do.. preferring for example to place my camera controls there rather than the timeline.
The text animators are great, but I agree, clumsy to work with…

I just got the official response from Adobe:
“There are several known issues with serial numbers right now, please
check the Adobe Labs forums for updates.1) Volume License serial numbers are not accepted by the web site. We
are implementing a manual process for Volume License Serial numbers but
it is not complete yet.2) CS2 upgrade serial numbers are not being accepted.
3) Production Studio Serial numbers are not being accepted.
Please enjoy the software in trial mode, it is functionally equivalent.

I can only assume that those parts of the adobe labs site aren’t wired up yet.

Depending on the DVD player you’ll need to set up for either HD or SD.
I’ve done several loops like these for trade shows using DVD SP set to widescreen (16:9) and 480p.
They look fine, perhaps not as crisp as true HD but my clients are using SD DVD players anyway.
If there’s no HD or BluRay at the other end SD works well.
My comps in After Effects are st to HD settings but my Compressor setting are for SD.
