I’ve modified the boot.ini to enable the 3GB switch and found the system became unstable.

I use both Mac’s and PC’s. My current Mac config is a G5 Quad 2.66 with 4.5 GB of RAM 0S 10.4.9, my PC config is a Quad Core Xeon 2.6 with 4 GB of RAM, XP Pro 32 bit, SP2. Yes, I own the software on both platforms. (The upgrade to CS3 will cost me dearly =0).
For sheer After Effects performnace the PC spanks the Mac. It previews and renders at more than twice the speed. I have Nucleo Pro on the Mac and it will render some files more quickly but in general it is much slower. After Effects 7 can only use 2 GB of RAM on the PC but can use 3 GB on the Mac. This can make a difference on some renders as After Effects uses RAM to cache files.
When CS3 arrives it will take advantage of multi-core/multi-processor and should post performance gains on both platforms.
All that said, its your workflow that really makes a real world difference. I prefer working on the Mac, the OS is smarter, managing files is easier.
As well, despite owning the Production Suite on the PC, I prefer editing in Final Cut.
The real difference in platforms has less to do with performance and more with user/workflow experience.

March 19, 2007 at 6:02 pm in reply to: How do you create water surface without plug-ins?Wave world can create fluid motion with wave dynamics. Two producer points, two wave types. Waves can create interference patterns.
Using a layer source for Ground you can have the waves react to an obstacle using the layers luminance values.
You can even animate the ground layer up to the surface to generate custom waves.

March 14, 2007 at 10:10 pm in reply to: Nucleo is down to $49 – best plugin ever (of course, next to Shine…) 😉I own Nucleo Pro and wouldn’t want to work without it.
That said, Nucleo is of limited use, particularly since Lloyd Alvarez released the Background render script.

This is borrowed from the Classroom in a Book for Version 5 and 6, an excellent set of tutorials developed by belief.
It is a simple animation of a rounded square, duplicated and offset several times.
The 5 copies of the image are set up in a square 3×3 grid and animated every few seconds to an empty space in the grid.
This is rendered and placed in a larger comp, duplicated and offset.
They then this comp as a track matte on other layers to create color and other looks.

If you only eased position on the camera and not point of interest it can make the animation appear jerky since the position and poi are not in sync.

February 23, 2007 at 11:01 pm in reply to: FATAL ERROR: ExtendScript Toolkit fails to launchFixed. Discovered the solution in a post on an Adobe Forum. Problem arose after installation of Photoshop CS3 Beta. There is a conflict between the ESTK 1 and the ESTK 2 instaled by the beta.
From the Forum:
On a Mac –/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Launch/estoolkit
On a PC –
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Launch\estoolkit
If you have installed the beta you’ll see 2 sub-folders, “1.0” and “2.0”. Remove the “2.0” folder and ESTK 1 *should* work again. If you launch ESTK 2 again, the folder will be re-created, and you’ll have to remove it again to launch 1.0.
