Did you watch the tutorial? You can modify the settings to achieve the look you want.

If you use 3 open path masks on the layer then apply the Stroke effect 3 times, each instance set to use one of the masks.
The trick is in the compositing settings or what the effect refers to as “Paint Style” for the Stroke effect – any instances subsequent to the first one should be set to “On Original Image”.

I agree that evolution of the product is a good thing. What is not necessary is the premature release of an unfinished product.
The users are the ones who suffer the bumpiness you refer to. Better to hold off and release the software when its ready for prime time.
This is beginning to sound too much like the ‘debate’ thread. Sorry – I’ll be quiet now.

I’d use the bones feature of the free DUIK tools. The linked tutorial has sur-titles in English for those who don’t understand French.

It must be a bug. Simply making the layer 3D on your sample file solves the problem.
Interesting it doesn’t appear to happen in CS6….

1. Select the null’s position keyframes and copy them (Cmd or ctrl +C).
2. Make a new solid layer and make a mask consisting of a single vertex with the pen tool
3. Reveal the Mask and select the Mask Path then paste, this should create a mask with the same path as the null’s position.
4. Select the Mask Path and copy (Cmd or ctrl +C).
5. Open a new Illustrator document and paste.
