Hello!! this question may sound stupid (maybe it actually is) but I was wondering if inside an After Effects composition is there any Z axis boundaries. I mean, if you’re working on a 720×480 composition an you move the camera 3000 pixels to the right you’ll be logically out of the composition, but as the Z axis behaves different I wonder if there is a limit for a camera or for an object to be moved or placed. I ask this question as I’m just starting to work with motion graphics and I’ve seen works in which a camera seems to go deep and deep into the Z axis.

    many thanks!

I’m guessing your talking about moving pictures, “The Ken Burns Effect”. Kinda where it seems as a seemless moving comp, as though the comp moving is actually through your eye? AE has 3d layers that you can use a camera with. It’s good to have photos with high pixel values to which you won’t lose resolution while zooming, panning etc.

So in short, yes, but it’s not like a 3d animation program where you have the depth in Z.

    I hope that makes sense.

Hi Todd, thanks for answering. My question is about depth in Z. When in AE you turn a layer into a 3d layer you can move it forward or backwards in the z axis, so can you with a camera or a light. What I know is if you have many layers and placed them at different distances in the z axis then you get a 3d composition. This done you can animate a camera that moves through the layers in the z axis.

My question refers to wheter there is a limit for an objet to be placed in the z axis. Can I have a layer placed at 200 in the z axis and another at 8000? is there a limt for a layer to be placed, let’s say 10000? I ask this question for as I see it you could have a composition that extends limitless into the z axis.

I’m sure there’s a limit (isn’t there always?)but I’ve never encountered it. I’ve placed layers at 50,000 in Z and never had an issue.
