Are you using Motion Blur and lights? Those can slow frame preview dramatically. Is OpenGL on? That can speed up 3D previews.
Additional RAM doesn’t really increase working speed, just gives you longer RAM previews and allows you to use multiple cores when rendering. I’m on a dual quad-core mac with 16GB of RAM, a similar configuration to yours.

Depending on the motion and tracking issues in the video, you may find that compositing the audio wave form on the train tracks can be accomplished using a 3D grid layer as a reference.

Nonetheless, keyframing a camera to retain perspective might be possible in the scenario you describe.

April, there’s a 2D layer in the middle of your Comp. That’s what’s causing the layering issue. You need to keep all 3D layers together, placing a 2D layer between then creates 2 separate 3D world spaces hence the apparent “problem”.

Try resetting the application preferences, they may be corrupt.
Hold down the Option + Command + Shift keys as After Effects launches, this will reset the preferences to their defaults.

Its infuriating not having printed manuals or pdf equivalents. At least Adobe product help page has links to current updated pdfs of their manuals.
Perhaps I’m a dinosaur, but I prefer a paper manual.

In the past Adobe has allowed you to switch platforms for a nominal administration fee.
You require a new serial number and license for the new platform and forsake the license to the old platform.
Since CS4 is the current version, I’m not certain they’d allow a platform switch without an upgrade as well.
Call the Adobe store, they are the *only* ones who can help you.

Check out using Null objects and Layer Sets in Invigorator.
You can tie an Invigorator object to a Null then position and animate the null.

I’m not currently using a Windows box, but it sounds like a directory level permissions issue. FWIW try right-clicking on the offending directory and setting permissions to read and write.

You need to uncheck “Uniform Scaling”.
