Or make the sphere from a nested comp. Geometrically a sphere is twice as wide as it is tall so make the nested comp that proportion.
For example:

A while ago, Todd Kopriva mentioned something in a post here suggesting that there would be some degree of UI customization in an upcoming release. I only hope it will provide a path to restore the UI to something more useable.

Would the Smoother help? Window > Smoother.

I don’t know of any method to parent a path vertex to another layer – though that doesn’t mean there isn’t a method….
Are you familiar with the terrific DUIK IK tools for After Effects? https://duduf.net/?page_id=151
When these are combined with puppet pins and nulls, they provide the functionality you require.
There’s a short tutorial on this technique here: https://duduf.training/?p=613

Would MiniMax get you part way to the auto bold?
I put together a crude example. The text doesn’t line up as well as yours…

December 7, 2014 at 2:24 am in reply to: Weird things happening in AE – ram preview – audio previewHave you tried resetting After Effects default preferences?
Since you’re on a Mac here’s the procedure:
Launch After Effects while holding down Option + Command + Shift
You should be presented with a dialog asking whether you want to reset the preferences. Click Yes… and see whether this resolves the issue.

The Continuously Rasterize switch does not function with shape layers regardless of the 3D render engine (Classic or Ray Traced). Shape layers are always Continuously Rasterized.
If the edges are soft or rough it may be that you are previewing in a draft mode, not the final mode. Or the Ray-tracing quality is set too low, check the options in Ray Traced 3D.
Also lights add volume and shading to Ray Traced 3D. This tutorial and free script may assist your efforts. (Shameless self-promotion here 😉 )

How are you trying to move the layers in Z? Are you able to see the Z values in the Timeline?
One thought – are you viewing the Comp from an orthographic view like Front rather than the Active Camera view?
